Test NS-5A - Inspecting Fuel Pump

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Jeep Wrangler, 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 1995 Jeep Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Perform TEST NS-2A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  at beginning of article. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  at the end of this article. Perform TEST VER-1A  after each repair.
  1. Using scan tool, stop fuel system actuation test. Using scan tool, actuate Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay. Touch fuel pump relay. If fuel pump relay does not pulsate when actuated, go to TEST NS-5B  . If fuel pump relay pulsates when actuated, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump relay and ensure connector is clean and not damaged. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on fused battery voltage circuit at fuel pump relay connector terminal "B" (Red wire on XJ and ZJ bodies or Red/White wire on YJ body). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in fused battery voltage circuit between fuel pump relay connector and splice.
  3. Reconnect fuel pump relay. Disconnect fuel pump harness connector. Ensure fuel pump connector has a clean and tight connection. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate fuel system. While still actuating, put scan tool in voltmeter mode. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on fuel pump relay output circuit at fuel pump connector terminal No. 3 (Dark Green/Orange wire on XJ body, Dark Green/Black wire on YJ body) or connector terminal No. 4 (Orange/Black wire on ZJ body). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 5). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  4. Stop fuel system actuation test. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of fuel pump ground circuit at connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire on XJ or Black/Orange wire on YJ body) or connector terminal No. 5 (Black wire on ZJ body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in fuel pump ground circuit. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace fuel pump.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump relay. Connect a jumper wire between fuel pump relay output circuit at relay connector terminal "D" (Dark Green/Orange wire on XJ body, Dark Green/Black wire on YJ body, or Orange/Black wire on ZJ body) and ground.
  6. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of fuel pump relay output circuit at relay connector terminal No. 3 (Dark Green/Orange wire on XJ body, or Dark Green/Black wire YJ body) or connector terminal No. 4 (Orange/Dark Blue wire on ZJ body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open fuel pump relay output circuit. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace fuel pump relay.
