Cylinder Head Removal

NOTE:
  • Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
  • To avoid damage, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
  • Connect the HDS to the DLC (see step 2 on GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ), and monitor ECT sensor 1. To avoid damaging the cylinder head, wait until the engine coolant temperature drops below 100°F (38°C) before loosening the cylinder head bolts.
  • Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
  • Keep the cam chain away from magnetic fields.
  1. Remove the cowl cover and the under-cowl panel (see COWL COVER REPLACEMENT ).
  2. Relieve the fuel pressure (see FUEL PRESSURE RELIEVING ).
  3. Drain the engine coolant (see COOLANT REPLACEMENT ).
  4. Do the 12 volt battery removal procedure (see 12 VOLT BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ).
  5. Remove the throttle body (see THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  6. Remove the intake manifold/chamber assembly (see REMOVAL ).
  7. Remove the injectors (see INJECTOR REPLACEMENT ).
  8. Remove the four ignition coils (see IGNITION COIL AND SPARK PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  9. Remove the warm-up TWC (see WARM UP TWC REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  10. Disconnect the CMP sensor connector (A) and the secondary HO2S connector (B).

  11. Disconnect the oil pressure switch connector (A) and the knock sensor connector (B).

  12. Remove the heater hose bracket (A) and the ground cable (B).

  13. Remove the harness holder bolt (C), then remove the harness holder (D) from the bracket.
  14. Disconnect the upper radiator hose (A), the water bypass hose (B), and the heater hose (C).

  15. Disconnect the ECT sensor 1 connector (D).
  16. Remove the cylinder head cover (see CYLINDER HEAD COVER REMOVAL  ).
  17. Remove the cam chain (see CAM CHAIN REMOVAL  ).
  18. Remove the cylinder head bolts. To prevent warpage, loosen the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time; repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened.

  19. Remove the cylinder head.
