Pinpoint Test D: Exhaust Heat EXCHANGER Exhaust Bypass Valve

  1. Refer to the Electronic Engine Controls - 2.5L for schematic and connector information.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PCM P237F:00 Exhaust Heat Exchanger Exhaust Bypass Valve 'A' Control Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the PCM senses a valid position but has not changed since start up.
    PCM P2C22:00 Exhaust Heat Exchanger Exhaust Bypass Valve 'A' Position Sensor Circuit: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the PCM senses a valid position but has not changed since start up.
    PCM P237C:00 Exhaust Heat Exchanger Exhaust Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the PCM senses an open circuit to the exhaust heat exchanger exhaust bypass valve.
    PCM P237D:00 Exhaust Heat Exchanger Exhaust Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the PCM senses low voltage on the exhaust heat exchanger exhaust bypass valve.
    PCM P237E:00 Exhaust Heat Exchanger Exhaust Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the PCM senses high voltage on the exhaust heat exchanger exhaust bypass valve.
    PCM P2C23:00 Exhaust Heat Exchanger Exhaust Bypass Valve 'A' Position Sensor Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the PCM senses a mismatch in the commanded and received heat exchanger valve position and the coolant temperature difference between inlet and outlet is within range.

    Possible Causes 

    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • For Escape/Kuga: BJB Fuse 7 (15A)
    • For Maverick: BJB Fuse 8 (15A)
    • PCM
    • Frozen valve / Broken linkages
    • Valve alignment
    • Faulty position sensor
    • Clogged heat exchanger
    • Hoses
    • Coolant leaks

  2. D1 CHECK THE EXHAUST HEAT EXCHANGER PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION)

    • Access the PCM and monitor the EHE_EBVA_POS_STPIDand

      Access the PCM and monitor the EHE_EBVA_MON_HZ (Hz) PID

    • Record the fault status codes and frequency.

    Is fault status code 3 or 160 hZ present? 

    Yes  SWITCH the ignition to the OFF position. GO to  D2
    No  For Escape/Kuga: GO to  D3For Maverick: GO to  D5
  3. D2 CHECK THE EXHAUST HEAT EXCHANGER FOR DAMAGE

    • Visually inspect the exhaust heat exchanger for damage or signs of failure.

    • Residual condensation from normal operation can freeze the exhaust heat exchanger valve restricting its movement. Using the Hybrid Engine Running Diagnostic Mode, run the engine to operating temperature to melt any residual ice build-up in the exhaust heat exchanger.

    • Access the PCM and monitor the EHE_EBVA_POS_STPIDand

      Access the PCM and monitor the EHE_EBVA_MON_HZ (Hz) PID

    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all DTCs.

    • Record the fault status codes and frequency.

    Was DTC P237C, P237D, P237E, P237F, P2C22 or P2C23 set and is fault status code 3 or 160 hZ present? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new exhaust heat exchanger. REFER to: Exhaust Heat Exchanger - Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (FHEV) (309-00B).
    No  CLEAR Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).For Escape/Kuga: GO to  D3For Maverick: GO to  D5
  4. D3 CHECK THE BJB (BATTERY JUNCTION BOX) FUSE 7 (15A)

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect BJB Fuse 7 (15A).

    • Visually inspect the BJB Fuse 7 (15A).

    Is the fuse OK? 

    Yes  GO to  D4
    No  REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  5. D4 CHECK THE EXHAUST HEAT EXCHANGER BYPASS VALVE CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Install BJB Fuse 7 (15A).

    • Disconnect exhaust heat exchanger exhaust bypass valve C3236.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C3236 Pin 3

      Ground

    Is battery voltage present? 

    Yes  GO to  D7
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  6. D5 CHECK THE BJB (BATTERY JUNCTION BOX) FUSE 8 (15A)

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect BJB Fuse 8 (15A).

    • Visually inspect the BJB Fuse 8 (15A).

    Is the fuse OK? 

    Yes  GO to  D6
    No  REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  7. D6 CHECK THE EXHAUST HEAT EXCHANGER BYPASS VALVE CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Install BJB Fuse 8 (15A).

    • Disconnect exhaust heat exchanger exhaust bypass valve C3236.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C3236 Pin 3

      Ground

    Is battery voltage present? 

    Yes  GO to  D7
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. D7 CHECK THE EXHAUST HEAT EXCHANGER EXHAUST BYPASS VALVE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance less then 5 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D8
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  9. D8 CHECK THE EXHAUST HEAT EXCHANGER EXHAUST BYPASS VALVE CONTROL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Disconnect exhaust heat exchanger exhaust bypass valve C3236.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is there any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  D9
  10. D9 CHECK THE EXHAUST HEAT EXCHANGER EXHAUST BYPASS VALVE CONTROL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D10
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  11. D10 CHECK THE EXHAUST HEAT EXCHANGER EXHAUST BYPASS VALVE CONTROL CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D11
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  12. D11 CHECK THE EXHAUST HEAT EXCHANGER EXHAUST BYPASS VALVE CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

    Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  D12
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  13. D12 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all PCM connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary

    • Reconnect all PCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Reconnect exhaust heat exchanger exhaust bypass valve connector.

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA.If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions.If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new exhaust heat exchanger. REFER to: Exhaust Heat Exchanger - Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (FHEV) (309-00B).
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
