Pinpoint Test J: Engine Disconnect Clutch

  1. Refer to Wiring Diagrams TRANSMISSION CONTROLS - 10R80 for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The engine disconnect clutch connects the gas engine to the hybrid drive unit. The clutch is applied for gas engine and combined electric and gas driving modes, and released for electric driving mode. The PCM controls the engine disconnect clutch using a solenoid mounted on the transmission fluid auxiliary pump. The engine disconnect clutch solenoid is a Casting Integrated Direct Acting Solenoid (CIDAS), which is mechanical in nature and no transmission fluid passes through it. It uses an armature pin assembly that moves a control valve in the transmission fluid auxiliary pump assembly to apply and control hydraulic fluid pressure. The engine disconnect clutch solenoid is directly proportional, meaning zero current equals zero pressure and maximum current equals maximum pressure. The engine disconnect clutch is disengaged until the engine disconnect clutch solenoid is energized, which supplies hydraulic pressure to the engine disconnect clutch and allows torque transfer between the gas engine and the hybrid drive assembly.

    If the PCM detects a circuit fault in the engine disconnect clutch solenoid circuit, or if it detects an application fault in the engine disconnect clutch, it will set a DTC.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PCM P287E:00 Engine Disconnect Clutch Actuator Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates an open circuit in the engine disconnect clutch solenoid circuit.
    PCM P287F:00 Engine Disconnect Clutch Actuator Circuit Range/Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC illuminates the wrench light in conjunction with P287E, P2880 and/or P2881. Resolve the more specific DTC first.
    PCM P2880:00 Engine Disconnect Clutch Actuator Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a short to ground in the engine disconnect clutch solenoid circuit.
    PCM P2881:00 Engine Disconnect Clutch Actuator Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a short to power in the engine disconnect clutch solenoid circuit.
    PCM P2884:00 Engine Disconnect Clutch Stuck Open: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a non-electrical fault that caused the engine disconnect clutch to fail to apply. When this DTC is present, the gas engine driving mode may not operate properly.
    PCM P2885:00 Engine Disconnect Clutch Engagement Fault: No Sub Type Information This DTC illuminates the wrench light in conjunction with P2884 and/or P2886. Resolve the more specific DTC first.
    PCM P2886:00 Engine Disconnect Clutch Stuck Closed: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a non-electrical fault that caused the engine disconnect clutch to remain applied when it was commanded off. When this DTC is present, the electric driving mode may not operate properly.
    PCM P28F6:00 Engine Disconnect Clutch Actuator Circuit Intermittent: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates an engine disconnect clutch circuit fault, but the fault did not last long enough to set a more specific DTC.

    Possible Sources 

    • Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals
    • Circuit open or shorted
    • Transmission internal wiring harness
    • Engine disconnect clutch solenoid
    • PCM
    • Engine disconnect clutch mechanical fault

  2. J1 CHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the KOEO and KOERPCM self-tests.

    Are diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P287E, P287F, P2880, P2881, P2884, P2885, P2886 and/or P28F6 present in the PCM? 

    Yes  If diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P287E, P287F, P2880, P2881, and/or P28F6 are present, RESOLVE those first. GO to  J3 For diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P2884, P2885 and/or P2886, GO to  J2
    No  The fault is not present at this time and may be intermittent.
  3. J2 VERIFY THE DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the PCM.

    • Access the PCM and monitor the ENGDIS_CLTOP_CMDPID

    • Road test the vehicle. Monitor PID ENGDIS_CLTOP_CMD to make sure both electric and gas engine driving modes are attempted.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the KOEO and KOERPCM self-tests.

    Are diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P2884, P2885 and/or P2886 present in the PCM? 

    Yes  For DTC P2884 and/or P2885, engine disconnect clutch does not apply condition, REFER to: Engine Disconnect Clutch . For DTC P2886 and/or P2885, engine disconnect clutch always applied condition, REFER to: Engine Disconnect Clutch .
    No  The fault is not present at this time and may be intermittent.
  4. J3 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID POWER CONTROL 2 (TSPC2) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Transmission vehicle harness C168A.

    • Disconnect PCM C175T.

    • Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J4
    No  REPAIR the open circuit.
  5. J4 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID POWER CONTROL 2 (TSPC2) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J5
    No  REPAIR the short to ground.
  6. J5 CHECK THE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J6
    No  REPAIR the open circuit.
  7. J6 CHECK THE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J7
    No  REPAIR the short to ground.
  8. J7 CHECK THE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO POWER

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the short to power.
    No  GO to  J8
  9. J8 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION INTERNAL WIRING HARNESS ENGINE DISCONNECT CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Engine disconnect clutch solenoid C1832.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Transmission component side, pin 11

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J9
    No  INSTALL a new transmission case harness. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness .
  10. J9 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION INTERNAL WIRING HARNESS ENGINE DISCONNECT CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Inspect the transmission internal wiring harness for pinched, chafing, or bare wires.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Transmission component side, pin 11

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J10
    No  INSTALL a new transmission case harness. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness .
  11. J10 CHECK THE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN WITH THE TRANSMISSION VEHICLE HARNESS CONNECTED

    • Connect Transmission vehicle harness C168A.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J11
    No  There is a terminal fitment issue. REPAIR any loose, damaged or bent terminals.
  12. J11 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID POWER CONTROL 2 (TSPC2) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN WITH THE TRANSMISSION VEHICLE HARNESS CONNECTED

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new transmission fluid auxiliary pump. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Pump . CARRY OUT the transmission fluid auxiliary pump strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .
    No  There is a terminal fitment issue. REPAIR any loose, damaged or bent terminals.
