Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The TR sensor assembly is an internally mounted sensor that includes the rooster comb and bracket, located next to the main control valve body. The components of the TR sensor are factory adjusted and the TR sensor must be installed as a calibrated assembly. The TR sensor contains electronic circuitry that provides the TCM a fixed frequency duty cycle for each of the various positions of the manual lever (PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL, D, M, 3, 2 and 1) to the TCM. The TCM uses the TR sensor signal for line pressure control, shift scheduling and TCC operation. The TCM sends network messages for engine start enable and reverse lamps.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition TCM P0705:00 Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit (PRNDL Input): No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the TCM detects an out of range condition due to a short to ground, a short to power or an open condition in the TR sensor circuitry. TCM P0706:00 Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the TCM detects an out of range condition due to a short to ground, a short to power or an open condition in the TR sensor circuitry. TCM P0707:00 Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the TCM detects an out of range condition due to a short to ground, a short to power or an open condition in the TR sensor circuitry. TCM P0708:00 Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the TCM detects an out of range condition due to a short to ground, a short to power or an open condition in the TR sensor circuitry. TCM P0709:00 Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit Intermittent: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the TCM detects an out of range condition due to a short to ground, a short to power or an open condition in the TR sensor circuitry. TCM P1702:00 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Intermittent: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets relationally if the DTCs P0705, P0706, P0708 or P0709 are set, RESOLVE these DTCs first. TCM P1705:00 Transmission Range Circuit Not Indicating Park/Neutral During Self Test: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the TCM self-test is run in R or a forward gear, the TR sensor is misaligned or the TR sensor is inoperative. PCM P1709:00 Park Neutral Position Switch Out Of Self Test Range: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the PCM self-test is run in R or a forward gear, the TR sensor is misaligned or the TR sensor is inoperative. TCM P1921:00 Transmission Range Signal: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets relationally if the DTCs P0705, P0706, P0708 or P0709 are set, RESOLVE these DTCs first. Possible Sources
- Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals
- TR sensor
- Transmission internal wiring harness
- TCM fault
- C1 VERIFY DTCsNOTE: Read and record all DTCs.
- Ignition OFF.
- Select PARK.
- Connect the diagnostic tool.
- Carry out the TCM self-test.
Are Transmission Range (TR) sensor DTCs present?
Yes GO to C2 No If any symptoms are present, REFER to: Diagnosis By Symptom . VERIFY the selector lever cable and linkage adjustment is correct. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6R140 . - C2 CHECK TR SENSOR ELECTRICAL OPERATION
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: TRPID: TR_DC and TR_FREQ.
- Move the selector lever into each range and stop.
- Observe the PIDs: TR_DC and TR_FREQ while wiggling the harness or driving the vehicle.
- Compare the PID TR_DC to the selector lever position duty cycle, using the following chart.

Is TR_FREQ between 75 to 175 Hz, is TR_DC within the specified range and do both remain steady when the harness is wiggled or the vehicle is driven?
Yes The system is operating normally at this time. If any symptoms are present, REFER to: Diagnosis By Symptom . No For diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0705, P0706, P0707, P0708, P0709, P1702 and/or P1921, GO to C4 For diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P1705 and/or P1709, GO to C3 - C3 VERIFY PROPER SELECTOR LEVER CABLE ADJUSTMENT
- Check the adjustment of the selector lever cable. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6R140 .
Is the selector lever cable properly adjusted?
Yes GO to C4 No ADJUST the selector lever cable. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6R140 . - C4 CHECK THE TR SENSOR VBPWR CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Transmission Vehicle Harness C1623.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead Refer to C1623-12 Ground
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to C5 No GO to C6 - C5 CHECK THE TR SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead Refer to C1623-13 Ground
Is voltage present?
Yes GO to C8 No GO to C6 - C6 CHECK THE TR SENSOR VBPWR AND SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect TCM C1750.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead Refer to C1623-12 Refer to C1750-8 Refer to C1623-13 Refer to C1750-40
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to C7 No Repair the circuit. - C7 CHECK THE TR SENSOR VBPWR AND SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead Refer to C1623-12 Ground Refer to C1623-13 Ground
Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download . No REPAIR the circuit. - Measure:
- C8 CHECK THE TR SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Ignition ON.
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to C10 No GO to C9 - C9 CHECK THE TR SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect TCM C1750.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download . No REPAIR the circuit. - C10 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION INTERNAL WIRING HARNESS FOR AN OPEN
- Drain the transmission fluid and remove the transmission fluid pan. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Pan .
- Disconnect the TR, TSS and OSS sensor electrical connectors.
- Measure the resistance of the TR sensor circuits between the transmission bulkhead connector and the TR sensor connector:

Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to C11 No INSTALL a new transmission internal wiring harness. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness . - C11 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION INTERNAL WIRING HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance of the TR sensor circuits between the TR sensor connector and ground:

Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms?
