Pinpoint Test D: The Steering Wheel Switch(Es) Illumination Is Inoperative

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
REFER to: Instrument Panel and Interior Switches Illumination - System Operation and Component Description .
Possible Sources
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Steering wheel switch(es)
- Steering wheel
- Clockspring/SCCM assembly
- Driver airbag
- WARNING: Incorrect repair techniques or actions can cause an accidental Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) deployment. Never compromise or depart from these instructions. Failure to precisely follow all instructions could result in serious personal injury from an accidental deployment.
- D1 CHECK ALL DIMMABLE STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES ILLUMINATION
- Ignition ON.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Place a shop light above the instrument panel ambient light sensor to make sure that the BCM outputs maximum illumination voltage.
- Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch up to the full illumination position.
Are all the dimmable steering wheel switches inoperative?
Yes GO to D2 No For the LH lower switch, GO to D5 For the LH upper switch, GO to D6 For the RH upper switch, GO to D7 - D2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES
- Ignition OFF.
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Disconnect SCCM C226A.
- Depower the SRS. REFER to: Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering .
- Disconnect Clockspring C218A.
- Ignition ON.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch up to the full illumination position.
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to D4 No GO to D3 - D3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE SCCM (STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE)
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C226A-12 Ground
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes REPAIR the ground circuit. No REPAIR the illumination circuit. - Measure:
- D4 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS
- Ignition OFF.
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Connect SCCM C226A.
- Connect Clockspring C218A.
- Remove the driver airbag. REFER to: Driver Airbag .
- Disconnect Clockspring C218B.
- Ignition ON.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead Clockspring C218B Pin 7 (component side) Clockspring C218B Pin 10 (component side)
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes CONNECT Clockspring C218B. INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to: Steering Wheel . No GO to D8 - D5 CHECK THE LH (LEFT-HAND) LOWER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Remove the driver airbag. REFER to: Driver Airbag .
- Disconnect LH Lower Steering Wheel Switch C2366.
- Ignition ON.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes INSTALL a new steering wheel switch. REFER to: Steering Wheel Multifunction Switch . No INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to: Steering Wheel . - D6 CHECK THE LH (LEFT-HAND) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Remove the driver airbag. REFER to: Driver Airbag .
- Disconnect LH Upper Steering Wheel Switch C2998.
- Ignition ON.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes INSTALL a new steering wheel switch. REFER to: Steering Wheel Multifunction Switch . No INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to: Steering Wheel . - D7 CHECK THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Remove the driver airbag. REFER to: Driver Airbag .
- Disconnect RH Upper Steering Wheel Switch C2491.
- Ignition ON.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes INSTALL a new steering wheel switch. REFER to: Steering Wheel Multifunction Switch . No INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to: Steering Wheel . - D8 CHECK FOR CORRECT SCCM (STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect all SCCM connectors.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the SCCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new clockspring/ SCCM assembly. REFER to: Clockspring . No Repower the SRS. REFER to: Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Repowering . The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
