Pinpoint Test N: The Liftgate Latch Release Is Inoperative Or Does Not Latch

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition BCM B12E8:11 Liftgate/Tailgate Control/Release Switch: Circuit Short To Ground Set by the BCM when a short to ground is detected on the tailgate release switch input circuit. BCM B14A9:11 Liftgate/Decklid Release Output: Circuit Short To Ground Set by the BCM when a short to ground is detected on the tailgate release actuator circuit. BCM B14A9:15 Liftgate/Decklid Release Output: Circuit Short To Battery Or Open Set by the BCM when a short to voltage or open is detected on the tailgate release actuator circuit. BCM B1540:11 Rear Cargo Door Release: Circuit Short To Ground Set by the BCM when it detects a short to ground on the cargo door latch release circuit. BCM B1540:15 Rear Cargo Door Release: Circuit Short To Battery Or Open Set by the BCM when it detects a short to power or open on the cargo door latch release circuit. Possible Sources

Visual Inspection and Pre-checks
- Inspect the BJB fuse 19 (10A) and make sure it is OK.
- N1 CHECK THE LIFTGATE LATCH
- Close the liftgate
Does the liftgate latch?
Yes GO to N3 No GO to N2 - N2 CHECK THE LIFTGATE LATCH OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Liftgate Latch C4339.
- CHECK the operation of the latch with a screwdriver
Does the liftgate latch fully latch (2 clicks)?
Yes INSTALL a new liftgate latch. REFER to: Liftgate Latch . No REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify the possible cause of the circuit short in the liftgate latch release circuit. - N3 PERFORM THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST
- Ignition ON.
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.
Are any DTC Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present?
Yes For DTC B12E8:11 GO to N4 For DTC B14A9:11, B14A9:15, B1540:11 and B1540:15 GO to N10 No GO to N6 - N4 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Liftgate Release Switch C4353.
- Ignition ON.
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.
Is DTC B12E8:11 still present?
Yes GO to N5 No INSTALL a new liftgate release switch. - N5 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect BCM C2280F.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C2280F-31 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to N19 No REPAIR the circuit. - N6 CHECK THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT USING THE TRUNK/LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH (TRNK/LG_R_SW) PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION)
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the BCM Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, monitor the BCMPID TRNK/LG_R_SW while pressing the liftgate release switch.
Does the PID indicate the switch is pressed?
Yes VERIFY the BJB fuse 9 (10A) is OK. If OK, for a liftgate GO to N10, for cargo doors. If not OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify the possible causes of the circuit fault. No GO to N7 - N7 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Liftgate Release Switch C4353.
- Ignition ON.
- Unlock the doors with the door lock control switch.
Does the liftgate latch release?
Yes INSTALL a new liftgate release switch. No GO to N8 - N8 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C4353-1 Ground
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to N9 No REPAIR the circuit. - N9 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect BCM C2280F.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to N19 No REPAIR the circuit. - N10 CHECK THE LIFTGATE LATCHNOTE: The following test step uses a test lamp to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only a Rotunda Test Lamp (SGT27000) or 250-300mA incandescent bulb test lamp. To avoid connector terminal damage, use the Rotunda Flex Probe kit for the test lamp probe connection to the vehicle. Do not use the test lamp probe directly on any connector.
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Liftgate Latch C4339.
- Ignition ON.
- Unlock the doors with the door lock control switch.
- Observe the test lamp while pressing the liftgate release switch.
Does the test lamp momentarily illuminate?
Yes INSTALL a new liftgate latch. No GO to N11 - N11 CHECK THE LIFTGATE LATCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C4339-2 Ground
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to N12 No REPAIR the circuit. - N12 CHECK THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) LIFTGATE RELEASE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect BCM C2280F.
- Disconnect BJB C1035A.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to N13 No REPAIR the circuit. - N13 CHECK THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) LIFTGATE RELEASE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C2280F-10 Ground
Is any voltage present?
Yes REPAIR the circuit. No GO to N14 - Measure:
- N14 CHECK THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) LIFTGATE RELEASE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C2280F-10 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to N15 No REPAIR the circuit. - Measure:
- N15 CHECK THE BJB (BATTERY JUNCTION BOX) LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to N16 No REPAIR the circuit. - N16 CHECK THE BJB (BATTERY JUNCTION BOX) LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C4339-1 Ground
Is any voltage present?
Yes REPAIR the circuit. No GO to N17 - Measure:
- N17 CHECK THE BJB (BATTERY JUNCTION BOX) LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C4339-1 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to N18 No REPAIR the circuit. - Measure:
- N18 CHECK THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Connect BJB C1035A.
- Connect Liftgate latch C4339.
- Close the liftgate
- Momentarily connect:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C2280F-10 Ground
Does the liftgate latch release?
Yes GO to N19 No GO to N20 - N19 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION
- Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminal - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to: BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) . No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues. - N20 CHECK FOR CORRECT BJB (BATTERY JUNCTION BOX) OPERATION
- Disconnect and inspect all BJB connectors.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminal - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the BJB connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, install a new BJB No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
