Pinpoint Test A: Clutch Transmission Fluid Cooler Cooling Fan, GEARSET Transmission Fluid Cooler Cooling Fan And/Or Engine Oil Cooler Cooling Fan Inoperative
- Refer to Cooling Fan
for schematic and connector information.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The clutch transmission fluid cooler cooling fan, gearset transmission fluid cooler cooling fan and engine oil cooler cooling fan each receive power through their own fuses and relays. All 3 relays are controlled by the TCM through a common control circuit. All 3 fans also share a common ground.

- A1 VERIFY THE CONCERN
- Road test the vehicle and verify the operation of the following components:
- Clutch transmission fluid cooler cooling fan
- Gearset transmission fluid cooler cooling fan
- Engine oil cooler cooling fan
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
Are diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0480, P0481, P0691, P0695 and/or P0696 present, or are any of the fans inoperative?
Yes If all three cooling fans are inoperative, GO to A2 If only the clutch transmission fluid cooler cooling fan is inoperative, GO to Pinpoint Test B If only the gearset transmission fluid cooler cooling fan is inoperative, GO to Pinpoint Test C If only the engine oil cooler cooling fan is inoperative, GO to Pinpoint Test D If any or all of the cooling fans are always on, GO to Pinpoint Test E No The concern is not present at this time. REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction and INSPECT the system for any damage or corrosion that could cause and intermittent fault. REPAIR as necessary. - Road test the vehicle and verify the operation of the following components:
- A2 CHECK CIRCUIT GD416 FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Cooling Fan Motor 3 C3593.
- Disconnect Cooling Fan Motor 4 C3594.
- Disconnect Cooling Fan Motor 5 C3596.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C3593-2 Ground C3594-2 Ground C3596-2 Ground
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A3 No REPAIR the circuit. - A3 CHECK CIRCUIT TCMC1 FOR AN OPEN
- Connect Cooling Fan Motor 3 C3593.
- Connect Cooling Fan Motor 4 C3594.
- Connect Cooling Fan Motor 5 C3596.
- Disconnect TCM C4555B.
- Connect a fused jumper:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C4555B-32 Ground
Do the cooling fans operate?
Yes INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . No REPAIR the TCMC1 circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
