1.4L Turbo Engine (Service Information) - 500L: Removal

CAUTION:

If the original engine has experienced a catastrophic failure or an individual failure with the piston, cylinder bore, engine block, valve or valve seat, the intake manifold MUST be replaced with a new manifold.

NOTE:

The oil cooler can not be cleaned out. In the event that the engine requires rebuilding or replacement, replace the oil cooler. Refer to COOLER, OIL, REMOVAL .

  1. Remove the engine cover .
  2. Perform the fuel pressure release procedure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
  3. Recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system. Refer to PLUMBING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  4. Remove the battery and battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, REMOVAL .
  5. Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL .
  6. Remove the vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, VACUUM, REMOVAL .
  7. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  8. Remove the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, REMOVAL .
  9. Remove the left and right front wheels. Refer to REMOVAL .
  10. Remove the right and left front wheelhouse splash shields. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, FRONT WHEELHOUSE REMOVAL .
  11. Remove the left and right axle shafts. Refer to REMOVAL .
  12. Remove the air supply hoses and rigid pipe from between the intercooler and the throttle body. Refer to COOLER AND HOSES, CHARGE AIR, REMOVAL .
  13. Remove the radiator. Refer to RADIATOR, ENGINE COOLING, REMOVAL .

  14. With assistance of a helper, support the front end module (FEM). Remove the lower bolts (2) from the FEM left and right lower mounts (1). Leave the nut (3) attached to the bumper support (1).

  15. Unplug the auxiliary water pump connector (1a) and remove the pump from its mount (1b).

  16. Disconnect the degassing hose quick coupling (1) from the thermostat housing.

  17. Remove the connector bolt (1a) and the nut (1b) and remove the coolant outlet tube from the turbocharger (1c).

  18. Remove the engine coolant bottle from the vehicle with the hoses attached.

  19. Remove the bolt (1a), loosen the band clamp (1b) and remove air outlet pipe from the turbocharger (1c).

  20. Remove the bolt (2) and the ground strap (1) from the transmission.

  21. Disconnect the gearshift cable (2) from the transmission manual valve lever (3).
  22. Remove the gearshift cable (2) from the bracket (1).

  23. Remove the nut and disconnect the starter supply lead (1).

  24. Unlock and disconnect the intermediate engine wire harness connector (1).
  25. Unlock and disconnect the PCM wire harness connector (2).

  27. Disconnect the front fuel vapor line quick coupling (1) from the purge valve.
  28. Disconnect the fuel manifold supply line quick coupling (2) from the fuel rail.
  29. Open the clips (3) retaining the pipes previously disconnected as noted below.

    NOTE:

    Unlock the evap and fuel line retainer (1) using a flat blade screwdriver or similar by pushing down and twisting in one motion at the locks (2 and 3).

  30. Disconnect the wastegate solenoid valve wire harness connection (1).

  31. Disconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses at the quick connects (1).

  32. Disconnect the A/C compressor refrigerant return hose quick coupling (1) from the evaporator core.

  33. Disconnect the wire harness connectors from the upstream (1) and downstream (2) oxygen sensors.
  34. Disengage the oxygen sensor wire harness from the retainer (3).

  35. Install the (special tool #10299, Bracket, Engine Lifting) (1) on the vacuum pump mounting surface with three bolts (2) provided with the engine lifting bracket. Tighten the bolts to 20 N.m (15 ft. lbs.).

  36. Remove the exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter outlet.
  37. Loosen the catalytic converter mounting bracket bolts (1).
  38. Remove the bolts (2a) and remove the catalytic converter mounting brackets (2b).
  39. Remove the rear engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, REMOVAL .
  40. Lower the vehicle.
  41. Reposition the main wire harness away from the engine.

  42. Install the engine leveling/lifting device (1). Position an appropriate lifting tool to the leveler.
  43. Lift the engine enough to safely unbolt the transmission and engine mounts.
  44. Remove the left engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, REMOVAL .
  45. Remove the right engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, REMOVAL .
  46. Lift the engine and transmission assembly from the vehicle.
