Test 47A - Back-Up Light Malfunction
NOTE:
Perform TEST 2A
before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION

. Perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A
after each repair.
CAUTION:
Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
- If back-up lights are on in all shifter positions, go to TEST 47B . If back-up lights are always off, go to step 4). Using scan tool, monitor back-up light status while shifting through all gear selections. If back-up light status does not match actual gear position, adjust shifter linkage and retest. If back-up lights function correctly, test is complete. If back-up lights are still malfunctioning, go to next step.
- Disconnect back-up relay. Remove valve body. See AUTO TRANS OVERHAUL - CHRYSLER 41TE/AE article. Inspect switch or sensor actuator ("rooster comb") for damage. Repair as needed. If actuator is okay, go to next step.
- Inspect shift cable and shift lever for damage. Repair as needed. If linkage is okay, replace relay.
- Disconnect back-up relay. Substitute known good relay. Turn ignition on. Place shift lever in "R" position. If back-up lights are now functioning, replace relay. If lights are not illuminated, go to next step.
- Remove relay. Move shift lever to "P" position. Use scan tool in voltmeter mode. On F24S and FJ22 models, measure voltage at terminal "D" on relay connector. On all other models, measure voltage at terminal "B" on relay connector. On all models, if voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open ignition switch output circuit. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Use scan tool in ohmmeter mode. On F24S and FJ22 models, measure resistance at terminal "B" on relay connector. On all other models, measure resistance at terminal "D" on relay connector. On all models, if resistance is less than 15 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 15 ohms or greater, repair open reverse light sense circuit.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector. Turn ignition on. Move shift lever to "R" position. Use scan tool in voltmeter mode. On F24S and FJ22 models, measure voltage at terminal 43 on TCM connector. On all other models, measure voltage at terminal No. 3 on TCM connector. On all models, if voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open TRS T3 sense circuit.
- Install back-up relay. Use scan tool in voltmeter mode. On F24S and FJ22 models, backprobe terminal "A" on relay connector. On all other models, backprobe terminal "C" on relay connector. On all models, if voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open back-up light relay control circuit. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Use scan tool in ohmmeter mode. On F24S and FJ22 models, measure resistance at terminal No. 41 on TCM connector. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, replace TCM. If resistance is 100 ohms or greater, go to next step.
- Disconnect transmission range switch or Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) connector. Use scan tool in ohmmeter mode. For models with a transmission range switch, measure resistance at terminal No. 1 on switch harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 12). If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair open ground circuit.
- Use scan tool in ohmmeter mode. For models with a TRS, measure resistance at terminal No. 3 on TRS harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair open ground circuit.
- For models with a transmission range switch, connect jumper wire between ground and terminal No. 3 of switch harness connector. For models with a TRS, connect jumper wire between ground and terminal No. 7 of sensor connector.
- Use scan tool in ohmmeter mode. On F24S and FJ22 models, measure resistance at terminal No. 41 on TCM connector. On all other models, measure resistance at terminal No. 1 on TCM connector. On all models, if resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace transmission range switch or TRS. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair open trans range T1 sense circuit.
