Test 19A - Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Control Circuit (DTC 38)

NOTE: Perform TEST 2A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A  after each repair.
  1. Connect a 0-300 psi gauge to TCC pressure port. See AUTO TRANS OVERHAUL - CHRYSLER 41TE/AE article. Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Test drive vehicle in overdrive until transmission reaches normal operating temperature.
  2. With vehicles speed more than 50 MPH and throttle at least 1/4 open, observe pressure gauge. If pressure is 10 psi or greater, remove and inspect valve body. Ensure TCC valve is not sticking. If pressure is less than 10 psi, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If code 38 is set, replace torque converter, transmission cooler and perform torque converter clutch break-in procedure. See AUTO TRANS OVERHAUL - CHRYSLER 41TE/AE article. If code 38 is not set, other possible causes of malfunction may be low or high fluid level or internal transaxle problem.
