Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Set the fuel injection pump driven sprocket to position as shown in the picture. Fix the fuel injection pump driven sprocket.

    NOTE:
    • Avoid the contact with cooling fluid and oil, it will damage the timing belt and can not be reused.
    • When affixing the pulley, use two hex socket head bolts M6 x 40 (30 mm unthread and 10 mm thread). The bolt must be tightened the whole length of the thread. This way the pulley is prevented from moving out of position.
  2. Lock the crankshaft, using the EN-46788  fixing tool (1).

    NOTE: Do not damage the timing belt. A damaged timing belt can not be reused.
    1. Install the timing belt to the crankshaft sprocket.
    2. Install the EN-46788  fixing tool (1).
      NOTE: Ensure that the timing belt does not fall off the sprocket during the installation procedure.
  3. Install the timing belt in the following sequence:

    NOTE:
    • The marks on the timing belt must fit to the marks on the sprockets, see arrows in graphic.
    • The timing belt tensioner must be loose.
    1. Start with the crankshaft sprocket (4).
    2. Second the timing belt tensioner (5).
    3. Third the water pump (6).
    4. Fourth the high pressure pump sprocket (1).
    5. Fifth the camshaft sprocket (2).
    6. The last one is the belt idler pulley (3).
  4. Tension the timing belt tensioner to the maximum tension, see arrows in picture, use a suitable tool (2).

  5. Tighten the tensioner bolt (1) to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
    CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .
    NOTE: The torque is not the final torque.
  6. Fasten the camshaft sprocket bolt.

    NOTE: The torque is not the final torque.
    1. Install the EN-47634  holding tool (2) to the camshaft sprocket (1).
    2. Hold up with the EN-956-1  extension (3) and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  7. Remove the EN-47634  holding tool and the EN-956-1  extension.
  8. Remove the EN-46788  fixing tool (1).

  9. Remove the EN-46789  locking tool (1).

  10. Remove the 2 fixing bolts from the fuel injection pump driven sprocket.
  11. Rotate the engine 720 degrees.
  12. Bring the tensioner (1) in nominal tension.

    1. Loosen the tensioner bolt.
    2. Bring the mobile index to the reference position (bore), see at arrows in picture.
    3. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
  13. Rotate the engine 720 degrees.
    NOTE: It is absolutely necessary to turn the engine clockwise, not in another direction.
  14. Check the engine timing.
    1. Install the EN-46789  locking tool (1).

    2. Install the EN-46788  fixing tool (1).

  15. Check tensioner tension and repeat the tension procedure if necessary.
  16. Bring the camshaft sprocket bolt to its final torque.

    1. Install the EN-47634  holding tool (2) to the camshaft sprocket (1).
    2. Hold up with the EN-956-1  extension (3) and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 130 N.m (96 lb ft).
  17. Remove the EN-47634  holding tool and the EN-956-1  extension.
  18. Remove the EN-46789  locking tool and the EN-46788  fixing tool.
  19. Install the oil pump bolt (1) and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).

  20. Install the camshaft housing closure bolt on the exhaust camshaft side.
  21. Install the engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement .
  22. Install the front wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement .
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24. Install the engine sight shield. Refer to Engine Sight Shield Replacement .
  25. Install the battery cover and disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  26. Remove the covers from the fender.
