Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement .
  2. Remove the transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement .
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Drain the transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill .
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector transmission control module (TCM).
  7. Remove the 4 wiring harness starter motor brackets (1) from the transmission.

    Remove 2 nuts and bolt.

  8. Remove the 2 upper transmission bolts (2).

  9. Install the J-28467-B  engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  10. Raise the vehicle.
  11. Remove the three-way catalytic converter. Refer to Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement .
  12. Remove the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement .
  13. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (1.8L LUW and LWE) , Starter Replacement (1.4L LUV) and Starter Replacement (2.0L Diesel LUZ) .
  14. Remove and DISCARD the 6 torque converter to flywheel bolts (1).

  15. Remove the left front wheel drive shaft from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side .
  16. Remove the front wheel intermediate drive shaft from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement .
  17. Remove the transmission rear mount bracket from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear .
  18. Remove the transmission front mount from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement .
  19. Loosen the transmission fluid cooler hose from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose Replacement .
  20. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (1.8L LUW and LWE) , Catalytic Converter Replacement (1.4L LUV) and Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.0L Diesel LUZ) .
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Remove and DISCARD the 3 left transmission mount bolts from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side .
  23. Lower the engine and the transmission on the left hand side with the J-28467-B  engine support fixture to allow clearance for removal.
  24. Raise the vehicle.
  25. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
  26. Remove the transmission bolts (1, 3, 4).

  27. Separate the transmission from the engine.
    NOTE: Insure the torque converter remains securely in place on the transmission input shaft while separating and removing the transmission.
  28. Remove the transmission from the transmission jack.
  29. Flush and flow test the transmission oil cooler and lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test .
