Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle

  1. Apply lithium grease to the exposed shaft engagement areas and then install the steering shaft to the centering sphere.

    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE

    Important:  Replace steering column support assembly after column has been staked 3 times.

  2. Install the steering column support assembly (2) to the steering column jacket assembly (3) by using the 4 Torx® head screws (1).

    Tighten 

    Tighten the screws to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).

  3. Install the steering shaft assembly to the steering column jacket assembly.

  4. Install the upper tilt head assembly onto the steering column support assembly.

  5. Install the 2 pivot pins (1).

    Stake the pivot pins in 3 locations.

  6. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (4).
  7. Install the lower bearing seat (3). The lower bearing seat must be in contact with the adapter and bearing assembly.
  8. Install the lower bearing spring (2).
  9. Install the lower spring retainer (1).

  10. Press the lower spring retainer (1) to compress the lower bearing spring (2).
  11. Measure the distance from the adapter and bearing assembly (3) to the lower spring retainer (1).
  12. The spring height must equal 15.00 mm (0.6 in).

  13. The upper steering shaft assembly must be rotated to the center position with the block tooth (1) in the 12 o'clock position.

  14. Install the bosch sensor (1).

  15. Install the sensor retainer (1). Align the slots of the sensor retainer to the ribs of the adapter and bearing assembly. Push the sensor retainer (1) until it contacts the analog extended range sensor assembly.
  16. Install the steering shaft seal (2).
  17. Install the tilt spring assembly. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle 
  18. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle

  19. Install the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle 
  20. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to ACTIVATING SYSTEM in SIR.
