Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Dual Battery)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery) .
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (1500)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (Heavy Duty)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (M5U, 2WD) .
  4. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  5. Remove the transmission crossmember. Refer to Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2 WD)Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4 WD) .
  6. Remove the transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement (Two Wheel Drive)Transmission Mount Replacement (Four Wheel Drive) .
  7. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement .
  8. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement (NQH)Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement (Heavy Duty) .

  10. Remove the torque converter access plug (1).

  12. Remove the left flywheel inspection cover bolt (1) and cover (2).
  13. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (L83, L86)Starter Replacement (L96) .

  15. Remove the right flywheel inspection cover bolt (1) and cover (2).

  17. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
  18. Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.

  20. Disconnect the vent tube hoses (2, 4) and the electrical connections from the transfer case, if equipped.
  21. Remove the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

  23. Remove the 3 bolts (1, 2) securing the heat shield to the transmission.
  24. Remove the transmission heat shield (3).

  26. Remove the range selector cable retaining clip (1) from the transmission range selector cable.
  27. Remove the range selector cable (2) from the range selector lever ball stud and the range selector cable bracket.
  28. Disconnect the transmission electrical connector from the transmission.
  29. Remove the wire harness from the transmission.

  31. Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.

  33. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines (2) from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (L86 M5U) .
  34. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.

  36. Remove the 6 upper bolts (1) securing the transmission to the engine.

  38. Remove the 2 lower bolts (1) securing the transmission to the engine.
  39. Pull the transmission straight back.
  40. Install the J 21366  converter holding strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  41. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  42. Flush and flow test the transmission oil cooler and lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test and Flushing (8L90) .
