Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban 3500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the J 21366  converter holding strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  2. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  3. Raise the transmission into place.
  4. Remove the J 21366  converter holding strap from the transmission.
  5. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.

    The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  6. Install the 6 upper bolts (1) securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the 2 lower bolts (1) securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  8. Connect the transmission vent hoses (2, 4).
  9. Install the wire harness to the transmission.
  10. Connect the transmission electrical connector to the transmission.

  11. Install the range selector cable (2) to the range selector cable bracket and the range selector lever ball stud.
  12. Install the range selector cable retaining clip (1) to the transmission range selector cable.

  13. Install the transmission heat shield (3).
  14. Install the 2 bolts (1, 2) securing the heat shield to the transmission and tighten to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).
  15. Install the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
  16. Connect the electrical connectors to the transfer case, if equipped.

  17. If reusing the torque converter bolts, clean the bolt threads and apply threadlocker or equivalent to the threads prior to installation. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .
  18. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts and tighten to 65 N.m (48 lb ft).

  19. Install the right flywheel inspection cover (2) and bolt (1). Tighten the bolt to 12 N.m (106 lb in).
  20. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (L83, L86)Starter Replacement (L96) .

  21. Install the left flywheel inspection cover (2) and bolt (1). Tighten the bolt to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

  22. Install the torque converter access plug.
  23. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement (NQH)Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement (Heavy Duty) .
  24. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement .
  25. Install the transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement (Two Wheel Drive)Transmission Mount Replacement (Four Wheel Drive) .
  26. Install the transmission crossmember. Refer to Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2 WD)Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4 WD) .
  27. Remove the transmission jack.
  28. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (1500)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (Heavy Duty)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (M5U, 2WD) .

  29. Connect the oil cooler lines (1) to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (L86 M5U)
  30. Lower the vehicle.
  31. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Dual Battery)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery)
  32. Fill the transmission to the proper level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Fill Procedure .
  33. Perform the solenoid valve characterization. Refer to Solenoid Valve Characterization Reprogramming .
    34. NOTE:

    The Service Fast Learn procedure must be performed when one of the following repairs have been made to the vehicle. Failure to perform the procedure after one of the following repairs may result in poor transmission performance, as well as transmission DTCs being set:

    The service fast learn procedure must be performed when any of the following repairs has been made to the transmission.

    • Pressure regulating solenoid replacement
    • Valve body repair or replacement
    • Any service/repair in response to a shift quality concern
    • Any internal transmission service, repair, overhaul, or replacement
    • Torque converter replacement
    • TCM replacement
    • Transmission assembly replacement
  34. Perform the service fast learn procedure. Refer to Transmission Service Fast Learn Procedure .
