Front Seat Outboard Seat Back Airbag Replacement (W2E)

WARNING:

Following the deployment of a side impact air bag, inspect the following parts for damage. Replace these parts if necessary:

  • The seat cushion frame
  • The seat recliner, if equipped
  • The seat adjuster
  • The seat back frame

Failure to do so may cause future personal injury.

WARNING:

Do not repair or replace the seat stitching or seams in the seat back trim cover with an internal mounted seat side airbag module. Replace the complete seat back trim cover from the OEM. Non-OEM seat stitching may cause improper airbag deployment which could result in personal injury.

Preliminary Procedure

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
  2. Remove the front seat. Refer to Front Seat Removal and Installation - Bucket (W2E) .
  3. Remove the front seat back cushion finish panel. Refer to Front Seat Back Cushion Finish Panel Replacement (W2E) .
  4. Remove the driver or passenger seat cushion air pump. Refer to Driver or Passenger Seat Cushion Air Pump Replacement (W2E) .
  5. Remove the front seat back cushion cover and pad. Refer to Front Seat Back Cushion Cover and Cushion Pad Replacement (W2E) .
1 Driver or Passenger Seat Side Inflatable Restraint Module

Procedure

  1. Disconnect CPA connector from the airbag module.
  2. Disconnect the electrical harness and note the routing for re-installation.
  3. Remove the airbag module from the two inside cover flaps.
  4. Note routing of airbag module through 'flap' on the top of the seat back cover during re-installation of the airbag module. The new airbag module should be mounted through the holes in seatback cover panel.
  5. The lower portion of the cushion cover must route behind the airbag (between the airbag and the seat back frame) before the cover can attach to the seat back frame.
  6. Attach the outer J-channel retainers that route the seat back cover over the airbag module and attaches to the seat back frame. Refer to Front Seat Back Cushion Cover and Cushion Pad Replacement (W2E)
