Replacing the rear bumper cover

NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
To ensure the quality of the Driver Assistance functions in vehicles with concealed radar sensors, the component may only be repainted in compliance with the following instructions:
No stickers or films (transparent or colored) may be affixed in the transmission areas of the radar sensors.
If there are no radar sensors fitted, the component may be painted.
The following features can be used to identify whether radar sensors are installed on the vehicle:
Radar sensors are installed at the rear if the triangular warning lamp is present on the exterior mirror (in the mirror glass or on the mirror frame).
Radar sensors are installed at the front and rear if the triangular warning light is present on the exterior mirror (in the mirror glass or on the mirror frame) in conjunction with optional equipment S5ATA or S5AUA.

Removing the trim on the bumper cover at the rear left and right

Removing the trim on the rear bumper panel

Release the trim (1) at all detents (arrows) and remove it.

Removing the tail light on the bumper cover on the left and right

WARNING: Work on components with requirements for a secure energy supply.
Ensure proper function after a repair.

Lines are allowed to have only one repair area.
Notices in the diagnostic system circuit diagrams must be observed.
Refer to NOTES ON THE CONTENT AND HANDLING OF DIAGNOSIS INFORMATION .

When components are replaced, any applicable notes in the BMW parts catalogue must be observed.

Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Loosen screws (1) .
Release the detents in the marked area.
Feed the tail light out of the bumper cover.

Replace the rear bumper cover.

Installing tail light on bumper cover at the left and right

Check the detents on the tail light (1) for damage.

Position the tail light on the bumper.
Lock the detents correctly in place in the marked area.
Tighten the screws (1) .

TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Tail light to bumper cover
Screw	Tightening torque	2.5 Nm

Connect connectors (1) and lock.

Installing the rear left and right bumper trim

NOTE: Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.

Installing the rear bumper trim

Check if all the detents (arrows) are present on the bumper trim (1) and if they are damaged; if necessary, replace the bumper trim (1) .
Install the bumper trim (1) and engage it at all detents (arrows).

Installing the trim on the rear left and right bumper cover

Install the trim on the rear bumper panel

Check all detents (arrows) on the trim (1) for damage, replace the trim (1) if necessary.
Install the trim (1) and engage it at all detents (arrows).

Remove the wiring harness (1) with all ultrasonic sensors and remount on the bumper cover lower section (2) .

Position the bumper cover lower section (1) correctly on the bumper cover upper section and snap it in at the locks along the dotted line.
