Replace all connecting rod bearing shells

- Note component's center of gravity.
- Support component using a jack.
- Secure component against falling off the jack.

- Before performing any installation work, allow cooling system to cool down to less than 40°C.
- Note warnings on cylinder head cover.

Preliminary work
- Remove ENGINE
- Install the ENGINE on the assembly stand
- Release the OIL DRAIN PLUG
- Tighten the OIL DRAIN PLUG
- Remove all SPARK PLUGS
- Remove the HIGH PRESSURE LINE between the high pressure pump and the rail
- Remove HIGH PRESSURE PUMP
- Remove the RAIL with injectors
- Remove both ACTUATORS
- Remove the cylinder head COVER .
- Remove tank VENT VALVE .
- Remove the INTAKE PLENUM .
- Remove the cylinder head HEAT SHIELD .
- Remove the exhaust turbocharger OIL RETURN LINE .
- Remove the exhaust turbocharger COOLANT RETURN LINE .
- Remove the exhaust gas turbocharger COOLANT FEED LINE .
- Block ENGINE in TDC firing position.
- Remove CHAIN TENSIONER .
- Release the intake adjuster VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Release exhaust camshaft adjuster VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Remove the intake adjuster VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Remove the exhaust camshaft adjuster VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Remove INTAKE ADJUSTER .
- Remove exhaust camshaft ADJUSTER .
- Remove the TEST GAUGES for securing the camshafts.
- Remove the CYLINDER HEAD .
- Remove the cylinder HEAD GASKET .
- Remove the oil pan ACOUSTIC COVER .
- Remove FLYWHEEL .
- Remove FRONT AXLE DIFFERENTIAL
- Remove bearing BRACKET .
- Remove OIL PAN .
- Remove oil VACUUM PUMP .
- Remove the OIL DEFLECTOR .
- Remove all PISTONS with connecting rod.
NOTE:
RISK OF DAMAGE
Engine damage caused by incorrectly installed bearing shells and bearing brackets.
If the bearing shells and bearing brackets are installed incorrectly, then engine damage can occur.

- Always install all bearing shells and bearing brackets in the same position from which they were removed.

Piston, piston pin, connecting rod and connecting rod bearing shells are matched to each other and balanced.
Always install the pistons, piston pins, connecting rods and connecting rod bearing shells in the cylinder from which they were removed.

- Feed the connecting rod bearing shell (2) out of the connecting rod (1) and remove it.
- Feed the connecting rod bearing shell (2) out of the connecting rod bearing cap (1) and remove it.
- Note the different equipment specifications of the connecting rod bearing shells (1) and (2).
- To avoid incorrect assembly: Observe marks (arrows).
Connecting rod bearing shell (1) and the connecting rod bearing shell (2) each have a fuse to prevent incorrect assembly.

Connecting rod bearing cap (2) and the connecting rod (1) each have a fuse to prevent incorrect assembly.
- Replace the connecting rod bearing shell (2) and insert it in the connecting rod (1).

- Oil the connecting rod bearing shell (2).
- Replace the connecting rod bearing shell (2) and insert in the connecting rod bearing cap (1).

- Oil the connecting rod bearing shell (2).
- Vacuum the crack surfaces (1) with a conventional vacuum cleaner (2).
The crack surfaces (1) must not be blown off with compressed air.
Follow-up work
- Measure PISTON .
- Measure a CYLINDER .
- Replacement: replace all PISTONS .
- Install all PISTONS with connecting rod.
- Install the OIL DEFLECTOR .
- Install the OIL VACUUM PUMP
- Refit engine OIL PAN .
- Install bearing BRACKET .
- Install FRONT AXLE DIFFERENTIAL
- Install the FLYWHEEL .
- Install the oil pan ACOUSTIC COVER .
- Block the CRANKSHAFT in the TDC firing position of cylinder 1.
- Seal the OIL DUCT .
- Clean SEALING SURFACES .
- Replace cylinder HEAD GASKET .
- Install the CYLINDER HEAD .
- Adjust the special tool CAMSHAFTS .
- Install exhaust camshaft ADJUSTER .
- Install the exhaust camshaft adjuster VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Install the intake ADJUSTER .
- Install the intake adjuster VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Pre-tension the TIMING CHAIN with the special tool.
- Tighten the exhaust camshaft adjuster VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Tighten the intake adjuster VANOS CENTRAL VALVE .
- Disassemble all SPECIAL TOOLS
- Install CHAIN TENSIONER .
- Install the cylinder head HEAT SHIELD .
- Check the camshaft TIMINGS .
- Install the exhaust turbocharger OIL RETURN LINE .
- Install the exhaust turbocharger coolant RETURN LINE .
- Install exhaust turbocharger COOLANT FEED LINE .
- Install cylinder head COVER .
- Install both ACTUATORS .
- PREPARE the injectors for installation.
- Install the RAIL with injectors.
- Install HIGH PRESSURE PUMP .
- Install the HIGH-PRESSURE LINE between the high-pressure pump and the high-pressure rail.
- Install all SPARK PLUGS .
- Install INTAKE PLENUM .
- Install the tank VENT VALVE .
- Remove the OIL FILLER CAP
- Top up the MOTOR OIL
- Install the OIL FILLER CAP
- Remove the ENGINE from assembly jig.
- Install ENGINE .
