Replacing Tailgate (M4 GTS Coupe, 2016 Only)

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Replacement: 

Place template for tailgate flush to the edge (1) and (2) of the tailgate.

Secure template using adhesive tape.

Transfer marks (3) to the tailgate.

Symmetrically perform this operation on the other side of the vehicle.

Compare distance x of the mark on the tailgate (1) to the distance y from the rear spoiler (2).

Distance x has to be equal to distance y.

Correct distance x, if necessary.

Attention! 

Wear safety goggles and a respiratory mask.

Remove swarf using an adequate vacuum cleaner.

Position the drill at a right angle to the surface of the tailgate.

Drill through marks using a Ø2 mm drill.

Open tailgate.

Attention! 

Wear safety goggles and a respiratory mask.

Remove swarf using an adequate vacuum cleaner.

Drill out the inner section of the tailgate only using a lock saw Ø22 mm (1).

Symmetrically perform this operation on the other side of the vehicle.

Close tailgate.

Attention! 

Wear safety goggles and a respiratory mask.

Remove swarf using an adequate vacuum cleaner.

Perform drilling with high drill speed using a sharp drill bit.

Drill out bore holes (1) using drill Ø11 mm.

Symmetrically perform this operation on the other side of the vehicle.

Open tailgate.

Attention! 

Wear safety goggles and a respiratory mask.

If reworking is required on the bore holes, perform rework only on the inner section of the tailgate.

Place bushings (1) from the inside in the bore holes.

If necessary, expand the bore holes on the inner section of the tailgate until the bushings fit snugly.

Symmetrically perform this operation on the other side of the vehicle.

Screw in screws (1) loosely.

Slide the adapter on the rear wing (2) on both bushings.

Check for ease of movement. If necessary, perform rework on the inner section of the tailgate.

Symmetrically perform this operation on the other side of the vehicle.

Mount rear wing for testing purposes.

If everything fits, remove and paint the tailgate.

Required reworking:
