Removing and installing/replacing right hydraulic cylinder from roof shell, middle (M4 Convertible)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Lock tailgate lock (1) left and right manually.

Soft-close automatic must be operated.

Carefully close tailgate and place on striker.

Move soft top into service position.

Move soft top so that angle of the hinges is not ≤90°.

IMPORTANT: Risk of damage! Pressure in hydraulic system drops and soft top loses its position.

Support rear roof shell to soft top cover with suitable auxiliary materials.

Auxiliary materials must lie over wide area and over entire length.

Rear roof shell is supported by auxiliary materials on soft top cover.

Roof shells block each other.

Makes hydraulic system de-pressurized:

IMPORTANT: The roof shells lower when the system is de-pressurized.

Carefully open tailgate, making sure tailgate does not damage soft top.

Feed out control unit (1).

Use a hexagon socket (AF 4) to slowly open the shutoff valve on the hydraulic unit by three turns.

NOTE: Shutoff valve is located under a plastic funnel.

Carefully close tailgate and place on striker.

IMPORTANT: Hydraulic fluid may emerge from the disconnected lines and the open connections on the hydraulic cylinder.

Protect components and work area with suitable materials (e.g. cloths).

Lever out clips (1).

NOTE: Hydraulic cylinder must be positioned so that the spring (3) tension is relieved (piston must not be resting on spring).

Drive out bearing journal (1 and 2).

Installation note:

Bearing pin (1) is shorter than bearing pin (2).

Remove hydraulic cylinder.

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Disconnecting hydraulic lines from cylinder:

Detach cable strap.

Installation note:

Replace cable strap.

Slide open retaining rings (1) with screwdriver.

Detach hydraulic lines (2).

IMPORTANT: Protect separation points (lines and cylinder) against dripping fluid, e.g. with a cleaning cloth.

Observe hose markings.

Make sure airbag hydraulic lines and wiring harness are exactly routed.

NOTE:
