Lowering inner headlining for roof shell, middle (M4 Convertible)

Special tools required: 

• 51 0 310

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Connect BATTERY CHARGER .

Installation note: 

• Microencapsulated screws (Loctite) must be replaced and may not  be reused
• Screw connection must be completed within 20 min. (start of hardening)
• Microencapsulated screws must not  be retightened
• Thread of nut must be cleaned beforehand in event of repeated use

Removal: 

Move soft top into service position.

Move soft top so that angle of the hinges is not  ≤90°.

Support rear roof shell to soft top cover with suitable auxiliary materials.

Auxiliary materials must lie over wide area and over entire length.

Rear roof shell is supported by auxiliary materials on soft top cover.

Roof shells block each other.

Step 1: 

Release clamps (2) with screwdriver and pull roof liner (1) off roof panel.

Step 2: 

Unclip front inner headlining with special tool 51 0 310.

Unlock connector on interior light and unplug.

Unclip rear inner headlining with special tool 51 0 310.

Step 4, left side: 

Release lower screw (1) on guide loop (3).

Slacken upper screw (2) on guide loop (3).

Pull guide loop (2) towards rear and feed out tension cable (4).

Step 4, right side: 

Release lower screw (1) on guide loop (3).

Slacken upper screw (2) on guide loop (3).

Pull guide loop (3) towards rear and feed out tension cable (4).

Step 5: 

Pull tensioning strap fully out of automatic reel.

Fit a detachable safety knot on the left and right sides in the tensioning strap to prevent the tensioning strap from retracting (rolling up).

Unscrew nuts (1).

Remove automatic reel (2).

Step 6: 

Release screws (1) and (2).

Step 7: 

Feed tension cable (1) out of retaining lug (2).

Set down roofliner in downward direction.

Repeat steps 5 to 7 on right side of vehicle.

Installation: 

Step 1: 

Feed tension cable (2) into retaining lug (3).

Step 2: 

Tighten screws (1) and (2).

Tightening torque 54 37 14AZ .

Step 3: 

Install automatic reel (2).

Tighten down nuts (1).

Pull tensioning strap out of automatic reel and unfasten safety knot.

Repeat steps 1 to 3 on right side of vehicle.

Step 4, left side: 

Attach tension cable (4) in guide loop (3).

Secure guide loop (3) with screws (1 and 2).

Tightening torque 54 37 15AZ .

Step 4, right side: 

Attach tension cable (4) in guide loop (3).

Secure guide loop (3) with screws (1 and 2).

Tightening torque 54 37 15AZ .

Step 5: 

Clip in roofliner at rear.

Step 6: 

Connect connector with interior light.

Clip in roofliner at front.

Step 7: 

Clip roofliner into clamps on roof shell.

Check that inner headlining is securely seated. If necessary, bend clamps closed prior to fitting.

Carry out work on the right side in the same way as for the left side illustrated here.
