Removing and installing transfer box (ATC 45L) (X6 M)

Special tools required: 

• 00 2 030
• 23 4 050
• 2 413 317

Attention! 

After completion of work, CHECKING TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL and top up if necessary.

Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the transfer box! 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Disconnect NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE .
• Remove REAR UNDERBODY PROTECTION. .
• Remove left UNDERBODY PANELLING .
• Remove complete EXHAUST SYSTEM .
• Remove heat shields.

Removal: 

Support transmission with special tools 00 2 030 and 23 4 050.

Tie up the front propeller shaft (1) using special tool 2 413 317.

• Remove TRANSMISSION CROSS MEMBER .
• Partially remove PROPELLER SHAFT .

• Disconnect propeller shaft at transmission.
• Release center mount.
• Tie up propeller shaft to underbody.

Release screw (2) and disconnect ground strap (1).

Disconnect the connector (3) from the control unit of the longitudinal torque distribution (transfer box).

Loosen screw connection of transfer box.

Take off transfer box (1).

Installation: 

Pay attention to dowel pin (1).

Grease dowel pin (1).

Apply a thin coat of grease to gearing.

Grease:  WEICON ANTI-SEIZE.

Installation note: 

When positioning the transfer box on the transmission, insert the propeller shaft into the transfer box.

Mount and engage sealing cup (1) and let it rest against dust guard completely (2).

Position transfer box (1).

Tighten the screws.

Tightening torque 27 10 1AZ .

Position ground strap (1).

Tighten screw (2).

Tightening torque 27 10 4AZ .

Disconnect the connector (3) on the control unit of the longitudinal torque distribution (transfer box).

• Install the PROPELLER SHAFT .
• Install the TRANSMISSION CROSS MEMBER .

Remove special tool 2 413 317 from the front propeller shaft (1).

Put special tools 00 2 030 and 23 4 050 to one side.

Required follow-up work: 

• Install heat shields.
• Completely install the EXHAUST SYSTEM .
• Install left UNDERBODY PANELLING .
• Install the rear UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
• Connect BATTERY EARTH LEAD .
