WARNING: High-voltage system - danger to life
The following points must be strictly observed prior to starting work:

DE-ENERGIZING THE HIGH-VOLTAGE SYSTEM .
Observe SAFETY INFORMATION for working with electric vehicles.

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Disconnect the BATTERY CABLE NEGATIVE TERMINAL .
Move engine compartment lid into SERVICE POSITION .
Remove the CATALYTIC CONVERTER .
Remove the TRANSMISSION .
Remove both output shafts. See REMOVING LEFT OUTPUT SHAFT and REMOVING RIGHT OUTPUT SHAFT .
Drain ENGINE OIL .
Remove top engine compartment PARTITION WALL .
Remove STRUT BRACE .
Remove INTAKE SILENCER HOUSING .
Remove BOTTOM CLEAN AIR PIPE .
Remove LEFT CHARGE AIR DUCT .
Remove RIGHT CHARGE-AIR DUCT .
Drain COOLANT .
Detach all coolant hoses from engine.
Remove COOLANT THERMOSTAT .
Evacuate AIR CONDITIONING .

Removal:

For removing and installing the engine, the towing hook 72 15 8 108 670 is required.

Screw towing hook onto cylinder head.

Fold back cover (1).

Release nut underneath. Remove positive battery cable lead (2) from positive battery connection point.

Release vacuum line (1) to vacuum pump.

Detach the fuel line at the snap fastener (1).

Unlock tank ventilation line (2) and disconnect.

Close off fuel line with special tool 13 5 161 .

Close off fuel line with special tool 13 5 162 .

Take off holder (1).

Release screws (1).

Remove refrigerant lines (2).

Tightening torque 64 52 1AZ .

IMPORTANT: Seal openings or lines on compressor with special tool 32 1 270 to prevent escape of media and dirt contamination.

Unlock and disconnect the connector (1).

IMPORTANT: Observe notes on UNLOCKING AND DISCONNECTING DIFFERENT PLUG CONNECTIONS ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES .

Unlock and pull off connector (1) from DME control unit.

Place engine wiring harness to one side.

Unlock and pull off connectors (1) to (3).

Securely attach engine wiring harness to engine.

Release screws (1) on engine mount on left and right.

Tightening torque: 22 11 2AZ .

Schematic diagram:

Screw towing eye (1) into cylinder head.

Tightening torque 11 12 5AZ .

Attach special tool 11 0 000 to engine lifter.

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 only from designated mounting eyelets (2).

IMPORTANT: Note restrictions on steering shaft and firewall.

Lift engine out with engine crane.

Installation:

IMPORTANT: Note restrictions on steering shaft and firewall.

Lift engine out with engine lifter.

Schematic diagram:

Tightening torque 11 12 5AZ .

Attach special tool 11 0 000 to engine lifter.

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 only from designated mounting eyelets (2).

Tighten screws (1) on engine mount on left and right.

Tightening torque: 22 11 2AZ .

Release the engine wiring harness on the engine.

Connect plug connectors (1 to 3).

Plug in connector (1) from the DME control unit.

Connect and lock the connector (1).

Installation note:

Replace sealing rings.

Use special tool 00 9 030 to install sealing rings without damaging them.

Position refrigerant lines (2).

Tighten down screws (1).

Tightening torque 64 52 1AZ .

Remove retainer 13 5 161 of fuel line.

Remove retainer 13 5 162 of fuel line.

Connect the fuel line at the snap fastener (1).

Plug on tank ventilation lines (2), lock must snap audibly into place.

Connect vacuum line (1) to the vacuum pump, lock must snap audibly into place.

Connect positive battery line (2) to the positive battery connection point.

Close cover (1).

Unscrew towing hook 72 15 8 108 670out of cylinder head.

Installation note:

Top up coolant. See BLEEDING/FILLING HIGH TEMPERATURE-COOLANT CIRCUIT WITH VACUUM-FILLING UNIT and CHECKING COOLING SYSTEM FOR WATERTIGHTNESS .

Assemble engine.

Check function of DME.
