Remove intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters

- Make sure that there is no charger connected to the jump start terminal in the engine compartment.
- Detach battery ground lead from battery.
- For auxiliary batteries: Detach battery minus cables from all auxiliary batteries.

- When working on the fuel system, make sure the workstation has sufficient ventilation, e.g., by means of extraction.
- Tightly seal off open lines and connections; collect any leakage fuel directly at the point of exit.
- No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
CAUTION:
On releasing high pressure line, fuel may emerge at high speed.

- Wear suitable personal protective equipment.
- Before performing any installation work, allow cooling system to cool down to less than 40°C.
- Note warnings on cylinder head cover.

Damage to battery terminal, the safety battery terminal or the intelligent battery sensor (IBS).
Damaged battery terminals can lead to malfunctions or vehicle electrical system faults.

- Detach battery terminal from battery pole by carefully shifting to and fro. Do not pry off using a tool.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
After replacing one or more VANOS central valves or VANOS adjusters:
When removing, make note of the identification/part number of the VANOS
central valve or VANOS adjuster and consider writing it down.
It must be replaced with a VANOS adjuster or VANOS central valve with the same part number. A mixed installation is not allowed.
Read out the vehicle I-level and proceed accordingly.
Be absolutely certain to pay attention to PuMA measure 64122020.

The VANOS central valves may only be released when the special tool 2 358 122 is installed.
- To release the central valve (1)
use the reversible ratchet (2)
from the special tool 0 496 855
with the special tool 2 450 487

- To release the central valve (1), use the special tool 0 496 855 .
- Release VANOS central valve of the exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) with the special tool 0 496 855
or 2 450 487
.
- Release the VANOS central valve of the intake adjuster (1)
with special tool 0 496 855
or 2 450 487
.
- Remove VANOS central valve (1) of the intake side.
- Remove the intake adjuster (1) from the intake camshaft.
- Remove the intake adjuster (1)
diagonally towards the bottom.
- Remove VANOS central valve (1)
of the exhaust side.
- Remove the exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) from the exhaust camshaft.
- Remove the exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) diagonally towards the bottom.
