11 00 050 Removing and installing engine (N20)
Special tools required:
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect negative BATTERY CABLE .
- Move ENGINE COMPARTMENT LID into service position
- Remove EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Remove GEARBOX .
- Remove OUTPUT SHAFTS at front (all-wheel drive vehicles only)
- Drain off ENGINE OIL .
- Remove firewall upper part SOUND INSULATION .
- Remove SUSPENSION CROSS-BRACE .
- Remove INTAKE SILENCER HOUSING .
- Remove BOTTOM CLEAN AIR PIPE .
- REMOVE left charge air duct
- REMOVE right charge air duct
- Detach all coolant hoses from engine
- Remove COOLANT THERMOSTAT .
- Evacuate HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM .
For removing and installing the engine, the towing hook 72 15 8 108 670 is required.
Fold back cover (1).
Release nut underneath. Remove positive battery cable lead (2) from positive battery connection point.
Tightening torque 12 42 3AZ .
Release vacuum line (1) to vacuum pump.
Detach the fuel line at the snap fastener (1).
Unlock tank ventilation line (2) and disconnect.
Close off fuel line with special tool 13 5 161 .
Close off fuel line with special tool 13 5 162 .
Release screws (1) and remove refrigerant lines.
Tightening torque 64 52 4AZ .
Installation note:
Replace sealing rings.
Use special tool 00 9 030 to install sealing rings without damaging them.
Unlock and pull off connector (1) from DME control unit.
Place engine wiring harness to one side.
Unlock and pull off connectors (1) to (3).
Securely attach engine wiring harness to engine.
Release screws (1) on engine mount on left and right.
Tightening torque: 22 11 2AZ .
Schematic diagram:
Screw towing eye (1) into cylinder head.
Tightening torque 11 12 5AZ .
Attach special tool 11 0 000 to engine crane.
Suspend special tool 11 0 000 only from designated mounting eyelets (2).
Lift engine out with engine crane.
Assemble engine.
Check function of DME.
