11 12 106 Removing And Installing Right Cylinder Head (N73)

NOTE:

For Special Tool identification, see ENGINE- SPECIAL TOOLS and MAINTENANCE AND GENERAL INFORMATION - SPECIAL TOOLS .

Special Tools Required: 

Cylinders 1 to 6.

Necessary Preliminary Tasks: 

IMPORTANT: Fit new cylinder head screws. Do not  wash off bolt coating. There must be no oil in the blind holes (risk of cracking  ).

Remove screw connection (1) from Valvetronic drive with special tool 11 7 270.

Remove worm drive (2) in direction of arrow.

Adjust eccentric shaft to max. stroke and pretension tensioning spring (1) with a cable tie (2).

Feed tensioning spring (1) out from roller (3) and carefully relieve tension.

Reset eccentric shaft to minimum stroke.

Release screw connection on tensioning spring (1) and remove towards top.

Release screw connection on eccentric shaft sensor (1) and remove.

Installation: 

Tightening torque, refer to 11 37 1AZ in ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Detach guide rail from cylinder head.

Release screw for oil lines (1) and unclip from holders.

Release cylinder head bolts (2) on timing case cover.

Release cylinder head bolts (3) along line (4) from outside to inside.

Coat gap (1) between engine block and timing case cover with Drei Bond 1209 liquid sealant.

Check adapter sleeves (2) for damage and correct installation position, replace if necessary.

Installation: 

All bores and blind holes must be free of oil and coolant. If necessary, blow clean with compressed air.

Install cylinder head gasket. Refer to 11 12 111 REPLACING RIGHT CYLINDER HEAD GASKET (N73) .

Illustrations show cylinders 7 to 12.

Put the cylinder head on.

Install cylinder head bolts with washers and initially tighten without play.

Tighten down cylinder head bolts with special tool 00 9 120 in sequence 1 to 14.

Installation: 

Tightening torque, refer to 11 12 8AZ in ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

NOTE: Shown without camshafts for purposes of clarity.

Insert and tighten down screws between cylinder head and timing case cover.

Installation: 

Tightening torque, refer to 11 14 1AZ in ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Adjust valve timing. Refer to 11 31 574 ADJUSTING CAMSHAFT TIMING ON RIGHT SIDE (N73) .

Assemble engine in reverse sequence to its disassembly.

Installation: 

Coat all bearings and cams of camshafts with engine oil.
