12 41 020 Removing And Installing/Replacing Starter Motor (S85)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Switch off ignition
Disconnect battery negative lead and cover.
Remove reinforcement plate. See 31 10 010 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REINFORCEMENT PLATE (6-SERIES) or 31 10 010 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REINFORCEMENT PLATE (5-SERIES) .
Remove rear underbody protection.
Remove propeller shaft. See 26 11 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE PROPELLER SHAFT (CONSTANT-VELOCITY JOINT) (5-SERIES)26 11 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE PROPELLER SHAFT (CONSTANT-VELOCITY JOINT) (6-SERIES) .
Remove intake air manifold. See 11 61 050 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR INTAKE MANIFOLD (S85) .
Remove right idle speed actuator. See 13 41 555 REPLACING BOTH IDLE SPEED ACTUATORS (S85) .

Unlock plug (1) and remove.

Unfasten nut.

Tightening torque. See ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Remove battery positive lead (2).

Release screw (1).

Unfasten screws (2).

Tightening torque. See ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Pull starter motor out of transmission mount and remove.

Installation:

Check starter pinion and ring gear for damage, replace damaged parts if necessary.
