Overview - Final Drive

NOTE:
Differential can be removed and installed without having to remove shifter, input shaft, output shaft, side shaft/pinion and transmission cover.
The bearing pre-load for the tapered roller bearing must be adjusted when replacing the final drive cover -7-. Refer to FINAL DRIVE COVER, REPLACING .
When the differential tapered roller bearing is replaced the differential must be adjusted. Refer to DIFFERENTIAL, ADJUSTING .
- Bolt
- 15 Nm + 45° additional turn
- Steel bolts (M8; 25 mm long)
- Quantity: 3
- Replacing
- Left Flange Shaft
- With bracket and ball bearing
- Removing and installing. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Left Flange Shaft Ball Bearing Pre-Tension, Checking and Adjusting. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT BALL BEARING PRE-TENSION, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING
- Replacing the ball bearing or bracket. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT BALL BEARING MOUNTING BRACKET, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Transmission Housing
- Shaft Seal
- For the left flange shaft
- Refer to LEFT SEAL, REPLACING
- Differential with Ring Gear
- Refer to DIFFERENTIAL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING
- Refer to OVERVIEW - DIFFERENTIAL
- O-Ring
- Always replace.
- Coat with transmission fluid
- Final Drive Cover
- Replacing. Refer to FINAL DRIVE COVER, REPLACING .
- Bolt
- 20 Nm + 90° additional turn
- Steel bolts (M8; 38 mm long)
- Quantity 10
- Circlip
- Always replace.
- Removing and installing. Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING - "Install The Right Flange Shaft".
- Right Flange Shaft
- Refer to RIGHT FLANGE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING
- Drive in using Bearing/Bushing Installer - Multiple Use VW295
- Shaft Seal
- For the right flange shaft
- Refer to RIGHT SEAL, REPLACING
- Circlip
- Replacing
- Ball Bearing
- For the left flange shaft
- Left Flange Shaft Ball Bearing Pre-Tension, Checking and Adjusting. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT BALL BEARING PRE-TENSION, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING
- Replacing. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT BALL BEARING MOUNTING BRACKET, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
