Transmission, vehicles with V8 4.2L FSI engine, installing: Notes
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2010 Audi A8, 2009 Audi A8, 2008 Audi A8, 2007 Audi A8, and 2004 Audi A8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Observe all repair notes → General Repair Notes .
NOTE:
- Clean ATF lines and ATF cooler before installing a replacement transmission → ATF lines and ATF cooler, cleaning .
- When performing repairs, replace self-locking nuts and bolts.
- Replace bolts which have a specified tightening angle, as well as seals and gaskets.
- Heat shield sleeves must be installed in their original positions.
- Secure all hose connections with hose clamps of the same type .
- All cable ties must be installed in their original positions.
Torque specifications → Torque specifications
- Before installing transmission make sure torque converter is correctly installed in the transmission.
Installation dimension:
Check installation dimension of torque converter before installing transmission.
CAUTION:
If the torque converter is not properly installed, the drive lugs on the torque converter and the ATF pump will be severely damaged when the transmission is attached to the engine.
- Before installing the transmission, make sure alignment sleeves - A - are correctly positioned on cylinder block, if necessary install.
- If an intermediate plate was equipped between engine and transmission, reinstall it in same position.
- Before guiding together the engine and transmission, turn torque converter and engine drive plate so that one hole and one threaded hole are at the level of the removed starter opening.
- Make sure that no wires become pinched when connecting the engine and transmission.
Note the following when installing the transmission.
CAUTION:
Before and during fastening the bolts of the engine/transmission flange, check that the torque converter can still be turned behind the drive plate. If the torque converter cannot be turned, it must be assumed that it has not been installed properly and that the drive plate of the torque converter or the ATF pump will be destroyed during final tightening of the bolts.
- Fasten transmission to engine.
- Raise engine/transmission farther.
- Tighten transmission cross member.
NOTE:
- The torque specifications apply only to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated, or black-finished nuts and bolts.
- Additional lubricant such as engine or gear oil may be used, but do not use lubricants that contain graphite.
- Do not use degreased parts.
- Tolerance for torque specification ± 15%.
- Insert guide pins of the adapter T40058 so that the large diameter - arrow 1 - faces toward the engine. The small diameter - arrow 2 - faces toward the adapter.
- To tighten torque converter bolts, counterhold the crankshaft with adapter T40058.
NOTE:
- Pay no attention to - arrow -.
- Use new original bolts to secure torque converter to drive plate .
- Install 3 bolts - arrow - of the torque converter in the opening of the removed starter hand-tight at first (turn crankshaft 1 /3 revolution further for each bolt).
- Then, tighten bolts of the torque converter to specified torque (turn crankshaft 1 /3 revolution further for each bolt).
- Install tunnel cross member.
- Install left lower coolant pipe →
