Valve Body, Removing And Installing

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Torque Wrench, 6-50Nm:VAG1331A

-- Disconnect the battery ground cable when the ignition is switched off. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the transmission fluid pan. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID PAN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

WARNING:

Do not run the engine or tow the vehicle when the transmission fluid pan is removed or when there is no ATF in the transmission.

The valve body and the wiring harnesses can also be removed with transmission installed.
Install the O-rings with ATF. Other types of lubrication leads to faults in the transmission control module hydraulics.
Always replace a contaminated or faulty valve body.
Only use lint-free cloths
Fill and check the ATF level after installing the transmission fluid pan. Refer to ATF, DRAINING AND FILLING .

-- Remove the transmission fluid screen. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID SCREEN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the wiring harness from the valve body. Refer to SENSOR WIRING HARNESS AND SOLENOID VALVES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- If equipped, bend the locking plate on the selector lever back -arrows-.

-- Remove the selector lever -1- from the selector shaft.

-- While doing so, carefully hold the selector lever -1- firmly with pliers -2- so that the torque is not transferred onto the Multifunction Transmission Range Switch -F125-.

-- Make sure the slider -3- on the valve body in which the selector lever engages is not damaged.

The selector valve is very >>sensitive<<. Even minor damage leads to malfunction.

-- Always slide the valve into the body, secure it from falling out and never interchange it.

The valve body bolts on the transmission housing have different lengths and must be replaced.

Only the indicated bolts -A and B- may be loosened.

CAUTION:

If the other bolts are loosened, the valve body function is impaired or the valve body will distort.

-- Loosen the valve body bolts -A and B- in a diagonal sequence and then carefully remove the valve body.

Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:

The wiring harness is attached to the sensor under the valve body.

-- Insert the valve body and secure it on the transmission with new bolts.

Bolts -A-		(Quantity: 7) M 6 X 27
Bolts -B-		(Quantity: 7) M 6 X 21

-- Tighten the valve body bolts -A and B- in a diagonal sequence. Tightening Specification. Refer to OVERVIEW - VALVE BODY .

-- Attach the selector lever -2- to the selector shaft -5-.

Make sure the pin on the selector lever -2- engages into the slider -1-. The slider must be positioned accordingly if necessary.

-- Install the lock washer -4- and nut -3- on the selector shaft -5-.

The centering collar on the nut must face the washer and fit into the washer when the nut is tightened.

-- Tighten the nut on the selector lever -1- to the tightening specification. Refer to OVERVIEW - VALVE BODY .

-- While doing so, carefully hold the selector lever -1- firmly with pliers -2- so that the torque is not transferred onto the Multifunction Transmission Range Switch -F125-.

-- Make sure the slider -3- on the valve body in which the selector lever engages is not damaged.

-- If equipped, bend up the locking plate at the nut -arrows-.

-- Install the wiring harness on the valve body. Refer to SENSOR WIRING HARNESS AND SOLENOID VALVES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the transmission fluid screen. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID SCREEN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the transmission fluid pan. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID PAN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Fill the ATF, and check the ATF level and add ATF if necessary. Refer to ATF, DRAINING AND FILLING .
