Valve Stem Seals, Removing And Installing
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Valve Lever:VW 541/1 A with Valve Lever - Press Tool 6:VW 541/6
- Seal Installer - Valve Stem Seal Tool:2036 with Seal Installer - Valve Stem Seal Tool Adapter Plates:2036/1
- Spark Plug Removal Tool:3122 B
- Puller - Valve Seal:3364
- Seal Installer - Valve Stem:3365
- Valve Cotter Tool Kit - Adapter:T40012/1
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Torque Wrench, 6-50Nm:VAG 1331A
Removing
-- Remove the camshafts. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the roller rocker lever together with the support elements and then lay it on a clean surface.
Be careful not to interchange the roller rocker levers and the support elements.
-- Remove the spark plugs using the Spark Plug Removal Tool:3122 B .
-- Set the piston for the respective cylinder to "bottom dead center (BDC)".
-- Insert the Seal Installer - Valve Stem Seal Tool: 2036 with Seal Installer - Valve Stem Seal Tool Adapter Plates: 2036/1 and adjust the bearing.
-- Install the Valve Cotter Tool Kit - Adapter:T40012/1 in the spark plug thread, connect the compressed air line with a commercially available adapter and apply constant pressure. At least 6 bar (87.02 psi).
-- Remove the valve springs with the Valve Lever: VW 541/1 A and Valve Lever - Press Tool 6 -VW 541/6.
Tight valve keepers can be loosened using light hammer taps on the extractor lever.
-- Remove the valve stem seals using Puller - Valve Seal:3364 .
Installing:
-- Place a plastic sleeve -A- on valve stem seal to prevent damage to new valve stem seals.
-- Lubricate the sealing lip on the valve stem seal -B-, insert it into the Seal Installer - Valve Stem:3365 and carefully slide it onto the valve guide.
-- Install the camshafts. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Adjust the valve timing. Refer to VALVE TIMING, ADJUSTING .
