Timing Chain And Oil Pump Drive Chain, Removing And Installing

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Camshaft Bar:T10068A 
• Counterhold - Multiple Use:T10172A 
• Torque Wrench, 6-50Nm:VAG 1331A 
• Torque Wrench, 40-200Nm:V.A.G 1332A 
• Adjustment Tool:T10363 
• Counterhold:T10587

• Refer to the => Parts Information for the correct sealant.

Removing

Conditions:

• Transmission removed
• Drive plate removed
• Oil pan removed
• Sealing flange removed
• Cylinder head cover removed

-- Remove the camshaft drive timing chain. Refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Press the chain tensioner together and disconnect with a 3 mm hex socket wrench -A-.

-- Remove the tensioner for the oil pump drive chain -arrows-.

-- Insert the Driver:T10587/1  -(A)- into the chain sprocket.

-- Position the Counterhold:T10587/2  -(B)- as shown and tighten on the cylinder block hand-tight.

-- Loosen the chain sprocket bolt -arrow-.

-- Remove the Counterhold:T10587  .

-- Remove the bolt all the way and remove the chain sprocket with the drive chain from the oil pump.

Installing:

-- Position the crankshaft at TDC.

• The milled drive chain sprocket tooth -A- must align with the bearing joint.

-- Turn the oil pump shaft -1- upward with the flat side -arrow- horizontal.

-- Install the timing chain into the guide rail and mount it on to the crankshaft.

-- Insert the large chain sprocket -1- into the drive chain so that the marking -arrow- is aligned with the marking on the oil pump.

-- Place the chain sprocket on the oil pump shaft and tighten hand-tight.

-- Install the timing chain tensioner -arrows-. Tightening specification. Refer to  OVERVIEW - CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAINS => List Item:10 Nm.

-- Remove the hex socket wrench -A-.

-- Check the adjustment markings.

• The milled drive chain sprocket tooth -A- must align with the bearing joint.
• The marking -arrow- must align with the marking on the oil pump.

-- Position the Counterhold:T10587  on the chain sprocket as shown.

-- Tighten the chain sprocket bolt -arrow-. Tightening specification. Refer to OVERVIEW - OIL PAN/OIL PUMP => List Item:Bolt .

-- Remove the Counterhold:T10587  .

-- Install the camshaft drive timing chain. Refer to Installing: .

Further assembly is performed in reverse order.
