CAUTION:

Risk of injuring the eyes from sealant residue.

- Wear protective eyewear.

-- Using a rotating plastic brush, remove the remaining sealant from the sealing flange and cylinder block.

-- Clean the sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.

-- Clean holes -arrow- in cylinder head seal of old sealant.

NOTE:

The holes in the cylinder head gasket are only partially visible when the cylinder head is installed.

Risk of damaging the cylinder head gasket. The cylinder head gasket can kink if it is bent too much. A kinked cylinder head gasket must be replaced.

-- Bend the end of cylinder head seal down slightly -arrows- until upper sealing surface on cylinder head seal and cylinder head can be cleaned.

-- Clean top and bottom of cylinder head seal, it must be free of oil and grease.

-- Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter: approximately 2 mm).

-- Apply a thin coat of sealant on the sealing surfaces of the upper and lower cylinder head gaskets. To do so, slightly bend the cylinder head gaskets downward again -arrows-.

-- To coat surface between cylinder head and seal, use a flat object, for example a feeler gauge.

-- Place a thin sealant bead -arrows- from below in both corners between the cylinder head seal and cylinder block so that cylinder head seal holes are filled.

-- Make sure the sealing flange alignment bushings are installed in the cylinder block.

-- Apply Sealant:D 176 501 A1 as shown and then install the sealing flange.

NOTE:

Install the sealing flange within five minutes after applying the sealant.

-- Tighten the sealing flange. Tightening specification Refer to Figure.

-- Install the crankshaft seal. Refer to CRANKSHAFT SEAL, REPLACING, TRANSMISSION SIDE .

-- Install the oil pan. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID PAN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the drive plate. Refer to DRIVE PLATE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .
