Crankshaft Overview

NOTE:
Before removing the crankshaft, prepare for appropriate storage, so that the sensor wheel does not make contact or become damaged.
The engine is to be secured to the engine and transmission holder VAS 6095 when performing assembly work.
NOTE:
On vehicles with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG R), a needle bearing must be installed in the rear of the crankshaft.
- Bolt
- 65 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
- Always replace.
- Fully threaded.
- Only tighten to 65 Nm to measure the radial play. Do not tighten to the additional torque.
- Bearing Cap
- Bearing cap 1: Belt pulley side.
- Retaining tabs on the bearing shells and cylinder block/bearing caps must align with one another.
- Screw
- 10 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
- Always replace.
- Sensor Wheel
- For the engine speed sensor.
- Replace the sensor wheel every time the screws are loosened.
- Only possible to install in one position - Bores are offset.
- Removing and installing, refer to SENSOR WHEEL .
- Crankshaft
- Axial play new: 0.07 to 0.23 mm wear limit: 0.30 mm.
- Check radial clearance using Plastigage 0.017 to 0.037 mm wear limit: 0.07 mm.
- Do not rotate the crankshaft when measuring the radial play.
- Crankshaft dimensions, refer to CRANKSHAFT DIMENSIONS .
- Removing and installing the needle bearing. Refer to CRANKSHAFT NEEDLE BEARINGS .
- Thrust Washers
- For bearing 3.
- Bearing Shell, for the Cylinder Block
- With a lubricating groove.
- Identification for replacement part ordering, refer to UPPER CRANKSHAFT BEARING IDENTIFICATION .
- Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark them).
- Sprocket
- For the oil pump drive.
- Bearing Shell, for the Bearing Cap
- Without a lubricating groove.
- Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark them).
