Installation [08/2019 - ]: Procedure
- INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY
- Engage the splines of the input shaft and turbine runner.
- Engage the splines of the stator shaft and stator while turning the torque converter assembly.
HINT:
If the stator shaft splines are difficult to engage with the stator splines, move the torque converter back approximately 10 mm (0.394 in.) and engage the splines while rotating the torque converter assembly.
- Turn the torque converter assembly to engage the key of the oil pump drive gear into the slot on the torque converter assembly.
- Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension A between the transmission contact surface of the engine and the torque converter contact surface of the drive plate.TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION
*1 Engine Surface *2 Drive Plate Surface - Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration and check that dimension B is more than dimension A, which was measured in the first step.
Standard distance
B = A + 1 mm (0.0394 in.) or more
NOTE:- Make sure to deduct the thickness of the straightedge.
- If the transmission is installed to the engine with the torque converter not sufficiently inserted, the torque converter may be damaged.
- Engage the splines of the input shaft and turbine runner.
- INSTALL NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET
- Install the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket to the automatic transmission assembly with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 14 N.m (143 kgf/cm, 10 ft.lbf)
- Install the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket to the automatic transmission assembly with the 2 bolts.
- INSTALL TRANSFER ASSEMBLY
- for VF4BM: (Refer to INSTALLATION [08/2015 - ] )
- for VF2CM: (Refer to INSTALLATION [08/2019 - ]
- for VF2A: (Refer to INSTALLATION [08/2015 - ] )
- INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
- Apply clutch spline grease to the surface of the crankshaft that contacts the torque converter centerpiece.
Clutch spline grease
Toyota Genuine Clutch Spline Grease or equivalent
Maximum grease amount
Approximately 1 g (0.0353 oz.)
TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION*1 Torque Converter Centerpiece *2 Crankshaft - Confirm that 2 knock pins are on the automatic transmission assembly contact surface of the engine cylinder block before automatic transmission assembly installation.
- Keeping the engine assembly and the automatic transmission assembly in a horizontal position, align the knock pins with each hole on the automatic transmission assembly and install the 9 bolts.
for 17 mm head bolt A
Torque: 71 N.m (724 kgf/cm, 52 ft.lbf)
for 14 mm head bolt B
Torque: 37 N.m (377 kgf/cm, 27 ft.lbf)
NOTE:- Make sure not to pinch or damage any wire harness.
- Make sure the knock pin is fully engaged with the knock pin hole.
- Do not forcibly pry the automatic transmission assembly.
- After installing the automatic transmission assembly, confirm that the torque converter assembly can be rotated by hand.
- Apply clutch spline grease to the surface of the crankshaft that contacts the torque converter centerpiece.
- CONNECT BREATHER HOSE
- Connect the 3 breather hoses to the engine assembly.
- CONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR
- for VF4BM:
- for VF2CM:
- Connect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, 2 speed sensor connectors, transfer control side connector.
HINT:
Pull up the lever until the claw of the transmission wire connector makes a connection sound.
- Attach the 7 wire harness clamps and connect the engine wire to the automatic transmission assembly and transfer assembly with the bolt.
Torque: 8.0 N.m (82 kgf/cm, 6 ft.lbf)
- Connect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, 2 speed sensor connectors, transfer control side connector.
- for VF2A:
- Tilt up the automatic transmission.
- INSTALL REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR
- Install the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator to the automatic transmission assembly with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 72.5 N.m (739 kgf/cm, 53 ft.lbf)
- Install the rear engine mounting heat insulator to the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator.
Torque: 12 N.m (122 kgf/cm, 9 ft.lbf)
- Install the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator to the automatic transmission assembly with the 4 bolts.
- INSTALL NO. 3 FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Install the No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly to the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 30 N.m (306 kgf/cm, 22 ft.lbf)
- Install the No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly to the frame with the 4 bolts and 4 nuts.NOTE:
Insert the bolt from the front of the vehicle.
HINT:
Hold the bolts and tighten the nuts.
Torque: 72 N.m (734 kgf/cm, 53 ft.lbf)
- Install the No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly to the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator with the 4 bolts.
- INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACKET LH AND RH (for X-Runner)
- Install the front suspension member bracket LH and RH with the 8 bolts.
Torque: 33 N.m (337 kgf/cm, 24 ft.lbf)
- Install the front suspension member bracket LH and RH with the 8 bolts.
- INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER SETTING BOLT
- Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the installation locations of the 6 drive plate and torque converter setting bolts and install each bolt while holding the crankshaft pulley setting bolt with a wrench.
Torque: 48 N.m (489 kgf/cm, 35 ft.lbf)
NOTE:Install the black bolt first, and then the 5 silver bolts.
- Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the installation locations of the 6 drive plate and torque converter setting bolts and install each bolt while holding the crankshaft pulley setting bolt with a wrench.
- INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER
- Install the flywheel housing side cover to the engine.
- CONNECT NO. 1 INLET OIL COOLER TUBE AND NO. 1 OUTLET OIL COOLER TUBE
- Temporarily install the ends of the No. 1 inlet oil cooler tube and No. 1 outlet oil cooler tube to each oil cooler tube union by hand.
- Connect the 2 clamps and install the 2 bolts.
Torque: 5.5 N.m (56 kgf/cm, 49 in.lbf)
- Using a union nut wrench, tighten the No. 1 inlet oil cooler tube and No. 1 outlet oil cooler tubes.
Torque: 34 N.m (347 kgf/cm, 25 ft.lbf)
NOTE:Use the formula to calculate special torque values for situations where a union nut wrench is combined with a torque wrench (Refer to PRECAUTION [08/2015 - 08/2022] , or refer to PRECAUTION [08/2022 - ] ).
- INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY

- CONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
- Connect the transmission control cable assembly to the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket with a new clip, and connect the cable end to the control shaft lever with the nut.
Torque: 14 N.m (143 kgf/cm, 10 ft.lbf)
- Connect the transmission control cable assembly to the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket with a new clip, and connect the cable end to the control shaft lever with the nut.
- INSTALL MANIFOLD STAY
- Install the manifold stay with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 40 N.m (408 kgf/cm, 30 ft.lbf)
- Install the manifold stay with the 3 bolts.
- INSTALL NO. 2 MANIFOLD STAY
- Install the No. 2 manifold stay with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 40 N.m (408 kgf/cm, 30 ft.lbf)
- Install the No. 2 manifold stay with the 3 bolts.
- INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY

- INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY

- INSTALL FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY

- INSTALL TRANSFER CASE LOWER PROTECTOR
- Install the transfer case lower protector with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 18 N.m (184 kgf/cm, 13 ft.lbf)
- Install the transfer case lower protector with the 4 bolts.
- INSTALL TRANSFER HIGH AND LOW SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY (for VF2A)
- While pushing the select return spring to the left with the end of the transfer high and low shift lever assembly, insert the end of the transfer high and low shift lever assembly into the shift fork.TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION
*1 Select Return Spring - While holding down the shift lever cap, install the snap ring to install the transfer high and low shift lever assembly.
- Return the transfer front drive shift boot to its original position.
- While pushing the select return spring to the left with the end of the transfer high and low shift lever assembly, insert the end of the transfer high and low shift lever assembly into the shift fork.
- INSTALL NO. 1 SHIFT AND SELECT LEVER BOOT (for VF2A)
- Install the No. 1 shift and select lever boot with the 4 screws.
- INSTALL CONSOLE BOX ASSEMBLY (for VF2A)

- CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL NOTE:
When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (Refer to INSTALLATION [08/2015 - ] ).
- ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

- ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
