Front Lower Ball Joint: Removal

HINT:

• Use the same procedure for the LH side and RH side.
• The following procedure listed is for the LH side.

1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL 
2. REMOVE FRONT AXLE SHAFT NUT (for 2AZ-FE)  (See REMOVAL )
3. REMOVE FRONT AXLE SHAFT NUT (for 2ZR-FE)  (See REMOVAL )
4. SEPARATE FRONT SPEED SENSOR 
   1. Remove the clamp and separate the front speed sensor from the front shock absorber.

   2. Remove the bolt and separate the front speed sensor and flexible hose from the front shock absorber bracket.

   3. Remove the bolt and separate the front speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
      NOTE:

      • Keep the front speed sensor tip and installation surfaces free of foreign matter.
      • Remove the front speed sensor without turning it from its original installation angle.
5. SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY  (See FRONT AXLE HUB BOLT )
6. REMOVE FRONT DISC  (See REMOVAL )

7. SEPARATE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)  (See REMOVAL )
8. SEPARATE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)  (See REMOVAL )
9. SEPARATE FRONT LOWER SUSPENSION ARM 
   1. Remove the bolt and 2 nuts, and separate the front lower suspension arm from the lower ball joint.
10. REMOVE FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
11. REMOVE FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT 
    1. Secure the front axle assembly in a vise.
       NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
    2. Remove the cotter pin and nut.

    3. Install 2 SST to the front lower ball joint as shown in the illustration.

       SST 09960-20010 (09961-02050, 09961-02050) 

       NOTE: Check that the clearance measurement between SST and the front axle assembly is 1 mm (0.0394 in.).

       HINT:

       Use 2 SST of the same type as shown in the illustration.

    4. Using SST, remove the front lower ball joint from the front axle assembly as shown in the illustration.

       SST 09960-20010 (09961-02010, 09961-02050, 09961-02050) 

       CAUTION: Apply grease to the threads and end of the SST bolt.
       NOTE:

       • Install SST so that A and B are parallel.
       • Be sure to place a wrench on the part indicated in the illustration.
       • Do not damage the front lower bail joint dust cover.

       HINT:

       Use 2 SST of the same type as shown in the illustration.
