Cylinder Head, Intake Manifold, Exhaust Manifold: Installation
- INSPECT CYLINDER HEAD SET BOLT
- Using vernier calipers, measure the tension portion diameter of the bolt.
Standard outside diameter:
8.95 to 9.05 mm (0.3524 to 0.3563 in.)
Minimum outside diameter:
8.75 mm (0.3445 in.)
If the diameter is less than the minimum, replace the bolt.
- Using vernier calipers, measure the tension portion diameter of the bolt.
- INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD GASKET NO.2
- Place a new cylinder head gasket on the cylinder block with the L mark upward.NOTE:
- Remove any oil from the contact surface.
- Be careful to install the gasket in the correct direction.
- Place the cylinder head on the gasket carefully in order not to damage the gasket at the bottom part of the head.
- Place a new cylinder head gasket on the cylinder block with the L mark upward.
- INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD LH NOTE: The cylinder head bolts are tightened in 2 successive steps.
- Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads of the cylinder head bolts.
- Install the plate washer to the cylinder head bolt.
- Using several steps, install and tighten the 8 cylinder head bolts uniformly in the sequence shown in the illustration.

Torque: 54 N*m (550 kgf*cm, 40 ft.*lbf)
- Mark the front side of each cylinder head bolt head with paint as shown in the illustration.
- Retighten the cylinder head bolts by 90° in the same sequence as step (c).
- Check that each painted mark is now at 90° angle to the front.
- Using a socket hexagon wrench 8 mm, install the hexagon bolt.
Torque: 19 N*m (189 kgf*cm, 14 ft.*lbf)
- Using several steps, install and tighten the 2 bolts and intake air connector bracket No.2 uniformly in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque: 7.0 N*m (71 kgf*cm, 62 in.*lbf)
- Connect the ground cable with the 2 bolts.
Torque: Nut A
8.4 N*m (85 kgf*cm, 74 in.*lbf)
Nut B
11 N*m (112 kgf*cm, 97 in.*lbf)
- INSTALL NO.4 CAMSHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY (See INSTALLATION )
- INSTALL NO.3 CAMSHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY (See INSTALLATION )
- INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (See ADJUSTMENT )
- INSTALL WATER INLET PIPE (See INSTALLATION )
- INSTALL OIL LEVEL GAUGE GUIDE
- Install a new O-ring to the oil level gauge guide.
- Apply soapy water to the O-ring.
- Push in the oil level gauge guide end into the guide hole of the cylinder block.
- Install the oil level gauge guide with the bolt.
Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf)
- Install the oil level gauge.
- INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD CONVERTER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.2
- Install a new gasket as shown in the illustration.
- Install the exhaust manifold converter No.2 with the 6 nuts and bolt. Using several steps, tighten the nuts uniformly in the sequence shown in the illustration.

Torque: 49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf)
- Retighten nuts 1 and 2 shown in the illustration.
- CONNECT COOLING FAN ECU
- Connect the 2 bolts and cooling fan ECU.
Torque: 2.6 N*m (26 kgf*cm, 23 in.*lbf)
- Connect the 2 bolts and cooling fan ECU.
- INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT INSULATOR NO.2
- Install the 2 bolts and exhaust manifold heat insulator No.2.
Torque: 8.5 N*m (87 kgf*cm, 75 in.*lbf)
- Install the 2 bolts and exhaust manifold heat insulator No.2.
- INSTALL MANIFOLD CONVERTER INSULATOR NO.3
- Install the bolt, nut and manifold converter insulator No.3.
Torque: 8.5 N*m (87 kgf*cm, 75 in.*lbf)
- Install the bolt, nut and manifold converter insulator No.3.
- INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
- Place a new cylinder head gasket on the cylinder block with the R mark upward.NOTE:

- INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
- Install a new gasket as shown in the illustration.
- Install a new gasket and the exhaust manifold RH with the 6 nuts. Using several steps, tighten the nuts uniformly in the sequence shown in the illustration.

Torque: 49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf)
- Retighten nuts 1 and 2 shown in the illustration.
- INSTALL MANIFOLD STAY
- Temporarily install the manifold stay to the exhaust manifold and transaxle.
- Fully tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 34 N*m (347 kgf*cm, 25 ft.*lbf)
- INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT INSULATOR NO.1
- Install the 3 bolts and exhaust manifold heat insulator No. 1.

- INSTALL WATER OUTLET
- Install 2 new gaskets to the 2 cylinder heads.
- Install the water outlet together with water bypass hose No.1 and unlock the hose clamp.
- Tighten the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 washers.
Torque: 15 N*m (153 kgf*cm, 11 ft.*lbf)
- Install the clamp.
- Connect the engine coolant temperature sensor connector.
- Connect the radiator hose inlet.
- CONNECT RADIATOR HOSE INLET
- INSTALL INTAKE MANIFOLD
- Install the intake manifold with the 9 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 washers. Using several steps, tighten the bolts and nuts uniformly in the sequence shown in the illustration.

Torque: 15 N*m (153 kgf*cm, 11 ft.*lbf)
- Retighten the water outlet mounting bolts and nuts.
Torque: 15 N*m (153 kgf*cm, 11 ft.*lbf)
- Install the ground cable with the nut.
Torque: 8.4 N*m (86 kgf*cm, 74 in.*lbf)
- Connect the heater inlet water hose.
- Install the intake manifold with the 9 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 washers. Using several steps, tighten the bolts and nuts uniformly in the sequence shown in the illustration.
