Front Drive Shaft: Installation

NOTE: When the front drive shaft is removed using the ST, install the front disc rotor. Ref. to BRAKE>FRONT DISC ROTOR>INSTALLATION .
  1. Before installation, check the front drive shaft. Ref. to DRIVE SHAFT SYSTEM>FRONT DRIVE SHAFT>INSPECTION .
  2. Replace the differential side retainer oil seal with a new part.
    CAUTION:
    • After pulling out the front drive shaft, be sure to replace with a new oil seal.
  3. Insert the front drive shaft into the hub spline, and pull it into the specified position.
    CAUTION:
    • Do not hammer the front drive shaft when installing it.
    • Be careful not to damage the spline portion of the front drive shaft.
    • Be careful not to damage the magnetic encoder.
  4. Tighten the axle nut temporarily.
    CAUTION: Be sure to use a new axle nut.
  5. Using the ST, install the front drive shaft to the transmission.

    Preparation tool: 

    ST: OIL SEAL PROTECTOR (28399SA010)

  6. Install the front axle housing to the front arm assembly.
    • Impreza model 

      Install the flange nut on the bottom of the ball joint.

      CAUTION: Use a new flange nut.

      Tightening torque: 

      100 N.m (10.2 kgf-m, 73.8 ft-lb)

    • Crosstrek model 

    Install the ball joint into the front axle housing.

    CAUTION:
    • Be careful not to damage the boot of the ball joint.
    • Before tightening, make sure the bottom surface of front axle housing and stepped section of ball joint COMPL are in contact.

    Tightening torque: 

    50 N.m (5.10 kgf-m, 36.9 ft-lb)

  7. Install the stabilizer link. (Impreza model)
    CAUTION: Use a new flange nut.

    Tightening torque: 

    60 N.m (6.1 kgf-m, 44.3 ft-lb)

  8. Install the brake hose bracket.

    Tightening torque: 

    33 N.m (3.4 kgf-m, 24.3 ft-lb)

  9. Install the front ABS wheel speed sensor and harness bracket.
    CAUTION: During the installation, make sure that the marking of ABS wheel speed sensor harness does not twist.

    Tightening torque: 

    7.5 N.m (0.8 kgf-m, 5.5 ft-lb)

  10. Install the crossmember support - rear.

    Tightening torque: 

    70 N.m (7.1 kgf-m, 51.6 ft-lb)

  11. While depressing the brake pedal, tighten the axle nut.
    CAUTION: Do not load the front axle before tightening the axle nut. Doing so may damage the front hub unit bearing.

    Tightening torque: 

    220 N.m (22.4 kgf-m, 162.3 ft-lb)

  12. Crimp the axle nut.

  13. Install the front wheels.

    Tightening torque: 

    120 N.m (12.2 kgf-m, 88.5 ft-lb)

  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Replace the self-locking nut of the strut mount connecting area, and tighten it using the ST. (Impreza model)
    CAUTION:
    • Replace the self-locking nut in the state where the wheels are in full contact with the ground.
    • Be sure to use a new self-locking nut.

    Preparation tool: 

    ST: STRUT MOUNT SOCKET (20399AG000)

    Tightening torque: 

    55 N.m (5.6 kgf-m, 40.6 ft-lb)

  16. Install the dust seal - front strut that protects the strut mount connecting area. (Impreza model)
  17. Inspect the wheel alignment and adjust if necessary. Ref. to FRONT SUSPENSION>WHEEL ALIGNMENT>INSPECTION . Ref. to FRONT SUSPENSION>WHEEL ALIGNMENT>ADJUSTMENT .
    CAUTION: When the wheel alignment has been adjusted, perform the following adjustment.
    • VDC sensor midpoint setting mode:
  18. Perform reinitialization of the auto headlight beam leveler system. (MT model) Ref. to LIGHTING SYSTEM>AUTO HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVELER SYSTEM>PROCEDURE .
