Air Bag Warning Light Stays On

NOTE: Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove driver-side kick panel. Check for poor connection at connector AB1 and B31. See Figure. If there is good contact in double lock of connectors AB1 and B31, go to next step. If there is poor contact in double lock of connectors AB1 and B31, repair as necessary and go to step  10.
  2. Ensure ignition is off. Connect body harness connector B31 to test harness "A", connector 1A. See Figure. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on (engine off). Connect test harness "A", connectors 3A and 4A together. If AIR BAG warning light does not illuminate, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light illuminates, go to step  4.
    NOTE: When problem has been corrected, disconnect connectors 3A and 4A.
  3. Inspect body wiring harness (including light circuit). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problems are found, repair as necessary and go to step  10. If no problems are found, replace AIR BAG warning light bulb and-or instrument cluster printed circuit and go to step  10.
  4. Disconnect and inspect air bag control module connector AB6. See Figure. If problems are found, repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 20 seconds. Reconnect connectors AB1 and B31. Remove instrument panel lower cover and disconnect lower clockspring connectors AB3 and AB8. See Figure. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB6. Connect connector AB6 to test harness "I" or "I2", connector 1I. See Figure or Figure . Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition switch on (with engine off). Connect test harness "I" or "I2", connectors 4I and 5I together. If AIR BAG warning light does not illuminate, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light illuminates, replace air bag system main wiring harness and go to step  10.
    NOTE: When problem has been corrected, disconnect connectors 4I and 5I.
  6. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Disconnect connector AB1 from body wiring harness connector B31. See Figure. Connector is located behind driver-side kick panel. Connect connector AB1 to test harness "A", connector 1A. See Figure. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "A", connector 5A, terminal No. 17. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair body grounding circuit and go to step  10.
  7. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "A", connector 5A, terminal No. 18. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair body grounding circuit and go to step  10.
  8. Reconnect connector AB1 to body wiring harness connector B31. See Figure. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB6. Connect connector AB6 to test harness "I" or "I2", connector 1I. See Figure or Figure . Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I" or "I2", connector 2I, terminal No. 9. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace air bag main wiring harness and go to step  10. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step.
  9. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I" or "I2", connector 2I, terminal No. 10. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace air bag main wiring harness and go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace air bag control module and go to next step. See CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  10. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
