  Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A 
  Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
  Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid.
Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid
Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A

REMOVING Remove     
1 Release adjusting nut of brake cable on parking brake lever up to end of thread and completely lower the parking brake lever IMPORTANT The thread must fit flush with the adjusting nut. AR42.20-P-0540SR 
2 Remove left or right rear wheel   AR40.10-P-1100SR
3 Unscrew bolts (2)    
4 Remove brake drum (1) from wheel hub (3) NOTES
The brake drum (1) must have unobstructed movement.
Otherwise, the brake may be damaged.
If the brake drum (1) cannot be removed.

Rest brake shoe (4) by turning the adjusting nut (7) through a wheel bolt threaded hole
NOTES
The bimetal fuse (6) may not be used here as a support bushing.
Otherwise, the bimetal fuse (6) may be damaged.
 
INSPECT Check     
5 Check brake drum (1) for wear and damage Inside diameter of brake drum In the event of complaints

Replace brake drums (1) and brake shoes (4) on each axle

6 Check brake shoes (4) for wear and damage NOTES
The brake lining of the brake shoes (4) must be absolutely free of grease.
Otherwise the braking effect will be impaired. Brake lining thickness In the event of complaints

Replace brake shoes (4) on each axle

7 Check leaktightness of wheel brake cylinder In the event of complaints

Replace wheel brake cylinder
NOTES
At the merest hint of a brake fluid leakage, the wheel brake cylinder must be replaced. Otherwise, the braking effect may be impaired.

CLEAN Clean     
8 Clean brake surface and contact surface of wheel hub (3) on brake drum (1) until they are metallic bright    
9 Clean contact surface of brake drum on wheel hub (3) until it is metallic bright    
INSTALLING install     
10 Apply light coating of brake paste to centering surface (A) Brake paste *BR00.45-Z-1060-06A 
MEASURING Measure     
11 Measure outside diameter of brake shoes (4), as shown    
12 Raise adjusting plate (5) using a screwdriver and adjust outside diameter of brake shoes (4) by turning adjusting nut (7) using a second screwdriver Presetting for outside diameter of brake shoes *BE42.10-P-1003-12E 
If adjusting nut (7) is sluggish

Replace brake adjuster
AR42.10-P-0165SR 
13 Mount brake drum (1) onto wheel hub (3)    
14 Tighten bolts (2) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, brake drum to wheel hub *BA42.10-P-1002-16D 
15 Mount left or right rear wheel IMPORTANT Only lower vehicle after mounting left or right rear wheel far enough to enable it still to be turned. AR40.10-P-1100SR
16 Slowly operate brake pedal repeatedly until an adjustment clicking is no longer heard NOTES
The parking brake lever may not be operated here.
Otherwise, the parking brake lever of the brake shoes (4) may be pulled onto the wheel hub bolts where they can no longer be released.
 
17 Adjust parking brake   AR42.20-P-0540SR 
INSPECT Check     
18 REFER TO MAINTENANCE Carry out brake test on the test stand   AP42.00-P-4290MCC
