Remove/install air spring - AR32.22-P-1500EW

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  . Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating range of the mechanism when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Empty air spring (41) using diagnostic system    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04A
    INSTALLATION NOTES
Carefully fill air spring (41) according to specifications.
The air spring (41) may otherwise be damaged and fail later.
 
2.1 Switch off ignition and remove transmitter key from electronic ignition lock control unit MODEL 212.0/1, 218
with CODE 488 (Steel/air suspension)
without CODE 889 (KEYLESS-GO)

without CODE 889 (KEYLESS-GO)

2.2 Switch off ignition and remove transmitter key or KEYLESS-GO start/stop button from electronic ignition lock control unit MODEL 212.0/1, 218
with CODE 488 (Steel/air suspension)

3 Remove left or right rear wheel    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050EW
4 Press locks (6e) of cover (6f) together using a suitable sleeve or a box wrench (7) (arrow B) and remove cover (6f) from left or right spring control arm (6)    
5 Detach electrical connector (4) from left rear-axle damping valve unit (Y53) or right rear-axle damping valve unit (Y54)    
6 Remove screw/bolt (1) When removing right air spring (41).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, brake wear sensor to brake caliper *BA42.10-P-1003-12J 
7 Remove bracket (2) from brake caliper (3) When removing right air spring (41).  
8 Detach pressure line (41a) from air spring (41) INSTALLATION NOTES
When reinstalling the old air spring (41), make sure that the pressure line (41a) is carefully screwed on to the plastic thread.
Otherwise, the plastic thread will be damaged thereby destroying the air spring (41).
IMPORTANT Seal pressure line (41a) with blind plugs during repair work.
When replacing the air spring (41):

Break open the clamping ring, detach pressure line connection and insert the pressure line (41a) up to the marking in the new pressure line connection. Pull back pressure line (41a) a short distance so that the peripheral retaining edges in the inside of the clamping ring engage in the line outer surface.
If pressure line (41a) is damaged or leaky or if pressure line connection is damaged:

9 Unscrew nut for damper to spring control arm (6) and pull relevant bolt out of spring control arm (6) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, shock absorber to spring control arm *BA32.25-P-1001-03M 
10 Press damper together and remove rearwards out of the spring control arm (6) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT The air spring (41) with the air spring centering (arrow A) must be positioned correctly in the lower spring control arm (6).  
11 Pull air spring (41) downwards carefully at its upper plastic frame until the air spring (41) releases from the retaining clip NOTES Do not turn air spring (41).
It will be damaged otherwise.
INSTALLATION NOTES
The air spring (41) must engage completely in the retaining clip.
Otherwise, when filling, the air spring (41) can tilt over in the upper spring cup thereby damaging the plastic frame of the air spring (41).
NOTESRemoval:  The retaining clip of air spring (41) is destroyed.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replacing retaining clip. ↓

12 Remove air spring (41) rearwards over the brake hose NOTESRemoval: 
Carefully remove air spring (41).
Otherwise, the outer boot of the air spring (41) may be damaged.
INSTALLATION NOTES
The outer boot on the air spring (41) may not be pressed in during assembly, rectify any deformations.
Otherwise the movement of the spring will damage the spring bellows on the inside.
 
INSPECT Check     
13 Check air spring (41) for damage If damage is present: ↓
Replace air spring (41).
 
14 Install in the reverse order    
15 Check AIRmatic or steel/air suspension for leaktightness MODEL 212

16 Read out fault memory using the diagnostic system and delete    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04A
DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
17 Perform engine test run and check AIRmatic for proper operation
