Removing and installing rear mufflers: Notes

  • Danger of burns! Parts of the exhaust system can be extremely hot.
  • Do not carry out the work until the exhaust system has cooled down or wear suitable protective gloves!

REAR MUFFLER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

No. Designation Qty. Removal Installation
1 Muffler 2   Tightening torque of the 3 M8 fastening screws: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.)
2 Fastening clamp for tailpipe 2 If corroded, treat with penetrating oil or heat. Replace clamp. Observe installation position; see description. Tightening torque of the screw: 30 Nm (22 ftlb.)
3 Tailpipe 2   For adjustment, see ADJUSTING TAILPIPE  and Adjusting tailpipe (as of MY '02)  .
4 Clamping sleeve 2 Move sleeve to remove the muffler. If corroded, treat with penetrating oil or heat. Replace clamping sleeve. Apply a light coating of high-temperature grease on the sleeve before installation. Tightening torque of the screws: 46 Nm (34 ftlb.)
