Preliminary Work

WARNING: Vehicle can fall down
  • Risk of squashing or crushing
  • Risk of damage to the vehicle

→ Do not place any solid objects under the raised vehicle.

→ Ensure that the lifting platform is prevented from lowering.

→ Remove solid objects before lowering the vehicle.

→ Raise the vehicle only at the jacking points provided.

→ The outer jacking points should be used primarily.

  1. Raise the vehicle.

    → 4X00IN01 LIFTING THE VEHICLE

  2. Place protective covers on the vehicle to avoid damaging the vehicle.
  3. Disconnect the battery.

    → 2706IN WORK INSTRUCTIONS AFTER DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY

    Information 

    • Use only steering wheel holders -A- that do not project into the area of the airbag unit -B-. 
    • If necessary, shorten guiding rod at the top -arrow-  .

  4. Move steering wheel into center position.
    WARNING: Highly inflammable or explosive materials
    • Danger of fire or explosion 

    → Avoid contact with hot parts or sources of ignition.

    → Use suction to remove ignitable vapors.

    → Attach warning sign in a clearly visible position.

  5. Display a warning sign in a clearly visible position in the work area or attach it to the vehicle.

  6. Remove front wheels.

    Use special tool Socket-wrench insert 300  .

    → 44051900 REMOVING AND INSTALLING WHEEL - section on "Removing"

    Wheel with central bolt. Use special tools socket-wrench insert 9796  and assembly aid 9794  .

    → 440519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING WHEEL WITH CENTRAL BOLT - section on "Removing"

  7. Remove rear part of front right wheel housing liner.

    → 505619 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER - section on "Removing"

  8. Remove fuel level sensor.

    → 201519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FUEL LEVEL SENSOR - TURBO  - section on "Removing"

  9. Drain the fuel tank.

    Fuel transfer unit WE WE1262  should be used.

    → 200317 DRAINING AND FILLING FUEL - TURBO 

  10. Remove the filler neck.

  11. Remove underbody panelling.

  12. Remove front final drive.

    → 398819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT FINAL DRIVE - section on "Removing"

    Information 

    Set the steering wheel with the wheels in straight-ahead position. If this is not done, the airbag contact unit will have to be put in center position after installation of the steering gear.

  13. Remove universal joint at the steering spindle.
    1. 13.1. Precondition: Steering wheel must be in center position.
    2. 13.2. Remove universal joint.

      Make sure not to pull the red lug -4- down as well because this will only increase the amount of assembly work required. 

      Loosen screw -1-  on the universal joint -2-  and remove it. Pull the universal joint off the steering spindle -3-  .

  14. Remove front-axle cross member.
