Removing Automatic Transmission

Information

When removing the engine, ensure that the torque converter in the automatic transmission does not slip out of the transmission.
Keep the torque converter pressed in position using a screwdriver when removing the engine.

Information

Some of the repair illustrations show only one side of the vehicle or a similar component.
Naturally, some steps also have to be performed on the opposite side of the vehicle as well.

Detach holder -1- for ATF lines at the rear of the engine.

Unclip ATF lines -A .
Place a suitable container underneath to catch emerging ATF.
Loosen the fastening screw -1- for the ATF lines -2- at the bottom of the transmission -3- .

Detaching ATF lines at bottom
Remove rear ATF line.
Close off the ATF lines and transmission bores using suitable stoppers.
Place a suitable container underneath to catch emerging ATF.
Loosen the front fastening screw -1- for the ATF lines -2- on the ATF heat exchanger -3- and pull it out.

Close off the ATF lines and bores in the heat exchanger using suitable stoppers.

ATF lines at top
Loosen clamps -1 - for the coolant hoses -2- on the elf of the transmission.
Pull off coolant hoses.

Unscrew and remove screws -1- from the coolant line holder -2- and bend holder to one side.

Unclip the wire harness -1- for the oxygen sensors on the left cylinder head cover out of the holder -2- .

Spray the screws on the primary catalytic converter with an anti-rust agent and leave to take effect.
Loosen the screws -1- on the catalytic converter.

Undo screws -1- on the holders -2- of the left and right primary catalytic converters -3- .

Remove the catalytic converters and set them aside.
Remove the front cardan shaft.
> WM, 390219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT CARDAN SHAFT - section on "REMOVING"
Release the electric plug connection -1- of the crankshaft pulse sender at the bottom of the transmission -a- and pull it off -A- .
Loosen the tie-wrap at the coolant line holder on the left if necessary.

Unclip the hose -1- for the transmission vent from the holder -2- .

Loosen the clamp -1- for the coolant hose -2- to the ATF heat exchanger on the right and pull of the hose from the connection piece.

Pull off vacuum hose -1- for the vacuum supply at the T-piece -2- .
Unclip the vacuum line -3- from the holder -4- .

Remove plug -1- used to seal the converter assembly opening.

Removing Plug used to seal converter assembly opening
Remove converter sewers. To do this, read and follow the next steps.
> 325019 Removing and installing torque converter - section on "REMOVING "
Turn crankshaft clockwise using special tool > 9714 - socket-wrench insert.
Insert special tool > 9595 - locating pins into the front drilled hole on the converter bell housing -arrow- and hold upwards with slight pressure until it engages when the crankshaft turns.

Disconnecting converter screws
Position special tool > 9688 - bit insert on the converter screw through the opening in the engine block and connect bit snap-on head and special tool > 9687 - insert one after the other.

Opening for converter screws
Remove special tool > 9595 - locating pins before loosening the converter screws.
Unscrew converter screw and twist out.
Complete the steps described above for the other five screws.
Attach the transmission -1- using > 2024A - suspension device-2- to the workshop crane -3- .

Suspending transmission
Raise the transmission -4- by a few centimetres and remove the screws -1,_2- from the transmission cross member -3- .

Rear transmission cross member
Undo and remove the screws -1- from the transmission to engine.

Transmission to engine
Remove transmission from engine. Press the torque converter off the drive plate with a screwdriver if necessary.
