Test 1: Driver-Side Firing Circuit

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Remove ignition key. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. Remove driver-side air bag unit. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Connect Special Tool (9516) to upper contact ring connector (in place of air bag unit). Clear control unit memory. See CLEARING TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition off, then back on. Check for trouble codes. See RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. If fault is not present, replace driver-side air bag unit. If fault is still present, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect contact ring connector. Connect Special Tool (9516/1) to harness side of lower contact ring connector (in place of contact ring). Clear control unit memory. See CLEARING TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition off, then back on. Check for trouble codes. See RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
  4. If fault is not present, replace contact ring. If fault is still present, check wiring harness for pinching, chafing or other damage. Repair wiring as necessary. If wiring is okay, replace control unit. See CONTROL UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
