Removal and Installation: Removal

CAUTION:
- Before replacing A/T assembly, perform "ADDITIONAL SERVICE WHEN REPLACING TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY". Refer to Description .
- When removing the A/T assembly from engine, first remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the A/T assembly.
- Be careful not to damage sensor edge.
NOTE:
When removing components such as hoses, tubes/lines, etc., cap or plug openings to prevent fluid from spilling.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Refer to Removal and Installation .
- Remove A/T fluid level gauge.
- Remove center exhaust tube and main muffler using power tool. Refer to Exploded View .
- Remove propeller shaft. Refer to Removal and Installation (3S1355) or Removal and Installation (3S1415).
- Remove crankshaft position sensor (POS) from A/T assembly.CAUTION:
- Do not subject it to impact by dropping or hitting it.
- Do not disassemble.
- Do not allow metal filings or foreign material to get on the sensor front edge magnetic area.
- Do not place in an area affected by magnetism.
- Remove harness from retainer clips.
- Disconnect A/T harness connector.
- Remove front under cover using power tool. Refer to Removal and Installation .
- Remove A/T control cable and A/T control cable bracket from the A/T assembly. Refer to Removal and Installation .
- Remove A/T fluid cooler tube. Refer to Exploded View .CAUTION: Do not reuse copper sealing washers.
- Remove the starter assembly. Refer to Removal and Installation .
- Remove dust cover from converter housing.
- Turn crankshaft to access and remove the four bolts for drive plate and torque converter.CAUTION: When turning crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine.
- Support engine and A/T assembly with a transmission jack.CAUTION: When setting the transmission jack, be careful not to allow it to collide against the drain plug.
- Remove A/T crossmember using power tool.
- Remove A/T fluid charging pipe from A/T assembly.CAUTION: Do not reuse O-ring.
- Tilt the A/T assembly downward to access A/T assembly to engine bolts.
- Remove the A/T assembly to engine bolts using power tool.
- Remove A/T assembly from vehicle using transmission jack.CAUTION:
- Secure torque converter to prevent it from dropping.
- Secure A/T assembly to a transmission jack.
