FRONT COVER : Removal and Installation: Removal

  1. Secure the engine assembly to stand. Refer to ENGINE ASSEMBLY : Setting  (FWD) or ENGINE ASSEMBLY : Setting  (AWD).
  2. Remove the oil pan (upper) using the following procedure:
    1. Remove the engine oil pressure control solenoid valve. Refer to ENGINE OIL PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE : Removal & Installation .
    2. Remove water hose A and water hose B from oil cooler. Refer to OIL COOLER : Exploded View .
    3. Remove the rear cover plate. Refer to OIL PAN (LOWER) : Exploded View .
    4. Loosen oil pan (upper) bolts in reverse of the sequence shown.

    5. Using a suitable tool, open up a gap between the oil pan (upper) and cylinder block.
      CAUTION: The liquid gasket used at the factory is very strong. Do not damage the mating surface.
    6. Insert Tool between oil pan (upper) and cylinder block, and slide it by tapping on the side of the Tool with a hammer.
      CAUTION: Be careful not to damage mating surface.

    7. Remove O-rings between cylinder block and oil pan (upper).
      CAUTION: Do not reuse O-rings.
  3. Disconnect the harness connectors from the exhaust valve timing intermediate lock control solenoid valve and exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve, electric intake valve timing control actuator and engine oil pressure sensor.
  4. Remove the engine oil pressure sensor (if necessary).
  5. Remove the exhaust valve timing intermediate lock control solenoid valve and exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve (if necessary).
  6. Loosen electric intake valve timing control actuator bolts in reverse of the sequence shown and remove electric intake valve timing control actuator.

  7. Unbolt ground cable and release harness retainers from front cover then reposition harness.
  8. Remove the drive belt auto tensioner. Refer to DRIVE BELT AUTO TENSIONER : Exploded View .
  9. Remove the bolt securing fuel rail protector to front cover. Refer to FUEL INJECTOR AND FUEL TUBE : Exploded View .
  10. Remove the torque rod (upper) bracket. Refer to ENGINE ASSEMBLY : Exploded View  (FWD) or ENGINE ASSEMBLY : Exploded View  (AWD).
  11. Remove crankshaft pulley (1) using the following procedure:

    1. Hold the crankshaft pulley (1) using suitable tool (A), then loosen and remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
    2. Attach suitable tool (A) in the M 6 (0.24 in diameter) thread hole on crankshaft pulley (1), and remove crankshaft pulley.

  12. Remove the front cover using the following procedure:
    1. Loosen front cover bolts in reverse of the sequence shown.

    2. Cut liquid gasket using Tool (A).

      CAUTION: Do not damage the front cover.
    3. Remove the front cover.
      CAUTION: Do not reuse O-rings or filter.
    4. Remove front oil seal using suitable tool.
      CAUTION:
      • Do not damage the front cover.
      • Do not reuse front oil seal.
    5. Remove the camshaft sprocket (INT) oil seal from the front cover (if necessary).
      CAUTION: Do not reuse camshaft sprocket (INT) oil seal if removed from front cover.
    6. Remove the tension guide (upper) from the front cover (if necessary).
