NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ).
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354, P0355, and/or P0356 indicated? 

    YES  -Go to step 5.

    NO  -Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil(s) and the PCM.

  5. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  6. Exchange the ignition coil from the problem cylinder with one from another cylinder.
  7. Start the engine.
  8. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    Is an ignition coil DTC indicated at the exchanged cylinder? 

    YES  -Replace the faulty ignition coil (see IGNITION COIL AND SPARK PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), then go to step  25.

    NO  -Go to step 9.

  9. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  10. Check the No. 9 IGN COIL + (15 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box.

    Is the (use OK? 

    YES  -Go to step 11.

    NO  -Go to step  12.

  11. Test the ignition coil relay (built into the relay control module) (see RELAY CONTROL MODULE TEST ).

    Is the relay OK? 

    YES  -Go to step  15.

    NO  -Replace the under-hood fuse/relay box (see DTC B1065: RELAY CONTROL MODULE LOST COMMUNICATION WITH DRIVER'S MPCS UNIT (DRLOCKSW MESSAGE) ), then go to step  25.

  12. Disconnect under-hood fuse/relay box connector H (9P).
  13. Disconnect all ignition coil 3P connectors.
  14. Check for continuity between No. 1 ignition coil 3P connector terminal No. 3 and body ground.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Repair a short in the wire between the ignition coil and the under-hood fuse/relay box (ignition coil relay). Also replace the No. 9 IGN COIL + (15 A) fuse, then go to step  25.

    NO  -Check the under-hood fuse/relay box, and replace it if needed (see DTC B1065: RELAY CONTROL MODULE LOST COMMUNICATION WITH DRIVER'S MPCS UNIT (DRLOCKSW MESSAGE) ), then go to step  25.

  15. Reconnect all connectors.
  16. Disconnect the ignition coil 3P connector from the problem cylinder.
  17. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  18. Measure the voltage between ignition coil 3P connector terminal No. 3 of the problem cylinder and body ground (see table).

    Is there battery voltage? 

    YES  -Go to step 19.

    NO  -Repair an open in the wire between the ignition coil and the under-hood fuse/relay box (ignition coil relay), then go to step  25.

  19. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  20. Check for continuity between ignition coil 3P connector terminal No. 2 of the problem cylinder and body ground (see table).

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Go to step 21.

    NO  -Repair an open in the wire between the ignition coil and G101, then go to step  25.

  21. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  22. Disconnect PCM connector B (49P).
  23. Check for continuity between body ground and the appropriate PCM connector terminal (see table).

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Repair a short in the wire between the PCM and the ignition coil, then go to step  26.

    NO  -Go to step 24.

  24. Check for continuity between appropriate ignition coil 3P connector terminal No. 1 and the PCM connector terminal of the problem cylinder (see table).

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Go to step  31.

    NO  -Repair an open in the wire between the PCM and the ignition coil, then go to step  26.

  25. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  26. Reconnect all connectors.
  27. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  28. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
  29. Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE ).
  30. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354, P0355, and/or P0356 indicated? 

    YES  -Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil(s) and the PCM, then go to step  1.

    NO  -Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC'S TROUBLESHOOTING .

  31. Reconnect all connectors.
  32. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software (see PCM UPDATE  ), or substitute a known-good PCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE PCM ).
  33. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354, P0355, and/or P0356 indicated? 

    YES  -Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil(s) and the PCM. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE PCM ), then recheck. If the PCM was substituted, go to step  1.

    NO  -If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM (see PCM REPLACEMENT  ). If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC'S TROUBLESHOOTING .
