Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Infiniti QX4, 2001 Nissan Pathfinder, and 2001 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform road test procedure. See ROAD TEST  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. If transmission did not shift from 3rd to 4th gear at specified speed during CRUISE TEST, go to next step. If transmission did shift from 3rd to 4th gear at specified speed, go to step  10.
  2. Perform line pressure test. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. If line pressure is okay, go to next step. If not, go to step  6.
  3. Remove valve body assembly. See appropriate SERVICING article. Disassemble valve body assembly. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Ensure valves, sleeve and plug slide along valve bore under their own weight, and are free of burrs, dents and scratches. Ensure control valve springs are free from damage, deformation and fatigue. Ensure hydraulic line is not plugged. Repair valve body assembly as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
  4. Road test vehicle. See ROAD TEST  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. If 3-4 shift is at specified speed, go to next step. If not, check valve body assembly again. Repair or replace as necessary.
  5. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE . If DTC does not set, testing is complete. If DTC is still present, go to step  10.
  6. Remove valve body assembly. See appropriate SERVICING article. Check line pressure solenoid valve. See SOLENOID VALVES  under COMPONENT TESTS. If line pressure solenoid valve is okay, go to next step.
  7. Disassemble valve body assembly. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Check line pressure circuit valves for sticking (pressure regulator valve, pilot valve and pressure modifier valve). Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to next step.
  8. Road test vehicle. See ROAD TEST  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. If 3-4 shift is at specified speed, go to next step. If not, check valve body assembly again. Repair or replace as necessary.
  9. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE . If DTC is still present, go to next step. If DTC is no longer present, repair is complete.
  10. Road test vehicle and ensure TCC lock-up occurs at specified speed. See ROAD TEST  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. If lock-up occurs at specified speed, go to step  1. If lock-up does not occur at specified speed, go to next step.
  11. Remove valve body assembly. See appropriate SERVICING article. Check TCC solenoid valve. See SOLENOID VALVES  under COMPONENT TESTS. If TCC solenoid valve is okay, go to next step.
  12. Disassemble valve body assembly. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Check TCC circuit valves for sticking (TCC control valve and TCC relief valve). Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to next step.
  13. Road test vehicle and ensure TCC lock-up occurs at specified speed. See ROAD TEST  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. If lock-up occurs at specified speed, go to next step. If lock-up does not occur at specified speed, check valve body assembly again.
  14. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE . If DTC is still present, go to step  1. If DTC is no longer present, testing is complete.
